Broadband in the future no doubt will become free but it wont be in our life time and if Putin has his way and WWIII erupts it would be in who ever is left alive lifetime either.

There's too many customers in this area, that's how it's congested, there's not enough capacity to cater for everyone.

And if all of those customers jump ship to BT or VM, their wireless will still be congesting your area because it has nothing to do with what ISP you use. VM don't buy wireless spectrum for your home, that's unlicensed spectrum in the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz range that anyone can use.

It's not Virgin's fault and there's literally nothing they can do about it.

[uber-pedant mode] Strictly speaking, VM were themselves the cause of large amounts of WiFi congestion in the past, firstly by having some of the heaviest users (which may still be true) but also by supplying a Superhub that originally was not WiFi compliant and caused twice as much interference as it should have. Furthermore, the original Superhub's 5Ghz channels were not DFS compliant so all of them were compressed onto just four channels in the 5Ghz band instead of spreading evenly across 19 channels. Both those factors have now been fixed, *but* they could still do more by moving everyone onto 802.11ad...

There's plenty of capacity to cater for everyone, your equipment is just not using it properly.
