You asked wether it was ok to do it. And it was explained...the issue with recording calls is the law.

I didn't ask if it was "OK to do it". I asked if it was true that VM staff are instructed to end the call.

You are calling the company and the person you are speaking to is acting in their official capacity as an agent of that company. The case of 'an individual person who happens to work for Virgin' would never apply unless you were calling them on their personal phone while they are out of the office.
