well if a TiVo could do what a V+ box does then I would have changed years ago but Virgin have decided to switch off the feature where you can play back in the background

I am paying £55.65 for V+ - TV XL and 20mb Broadband - Virgin pricing does not make any sense at all but they wont give me a better price unless I ditch the V+ box.

the V+ box is not limping along apart from the odd restart its working fine

It wasn't switched off, the TiVo hardware has never been designed to do it in the first place.

Even between the SA and Samsung V+ HD boxes it works differently due to hardware differences.

What is the 'play back in the background feature' on the V+? Does It mean that you can play back recordings and view them in the mini screen whilst, say, browse the EPG?

No it can't do that.

It was originally a function on the SA V+ HD box which allowed you to queue up recordings to output over the VCR SCART so they could be archived whilst you watched live TV or another recording.

The feature was carried over to the Samsung V+ HD box but with some limitations due to technical differences - on the SA V+ HD box it worked if your TV was connected via SCART or HDMI, on the Samsung box it only worked if you were connected to your TV via HDMI.

Ok, thanks for the info. How do I know which box I have?

Just to add that my V+ has been reebooting at random points too.

I initially thought that it may be because it was on it's way out, but now wonder if it could be because the memory is running low from what Spiderplant said about the removal of some barker channel/radio station synopsis and programme listings.

I can't physically get down to look, is there any other way of telling? Mines the version that won't record radio if that's any indicator!

It just did it again. This getting to be very irritating.

And again. It really does not want me to watch this recording.

As we are discussing V+ boxes I was wondering if someone could answer me a question. A neighbor who recently moved into their house found a V+ box in the loft and as he doesn`t have cable tv gave it to me. Will virgin activate it for me if I ask them? I have tivo in the living room and a v hd box in the bedroom so am hoping to swap the V+ box for the v hd box. Anyone done a similar thing?

Re: Updating V+ boxes at odd times

No, Virgin won't activate it. Any kit has to come directly from Virgin Media to you.

Do you already have a TiVO?

Well, somethings certainly not right.

As well as experiencing the same issues as Maggy, for the second time this week I have turned the TV on to find the V+ showing a black picture with a white border around it.

The only way to get rid of this is to reboot the box. After the reboot I found that many planned programmes had moved into 'recordings', marked as 'failed'.
