Re: Youtube Dead Again

as per those with the problems I am in the west midlands, and im getting videos just not buffering at all, and can see the full preview, however some are okay

Looks like another regional cache overload, why arent VM pro-actively monitoring this (as well as the rest of their network)???

Not exactly clear whether you are indeed suffering intermittently or not. Is your CDN in Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Manchester or perhaps even Leeds?

I suspect VM's IBM NMC (possibly based at Swansea) are indeed monitoring but they're not directly customer facing and any more recent advance trend predictions may simply have overtaken any VM's current planned CDN rollouts? Either way VM are unlikely to supply a full detailed explanation, apart from usual generic one line apology. :(

As I am sure you are well aware by now, a minority of our users in various locations around the country have been experiencing intermittent problems relating to the youtube service. Whilst this problem extends beyond the realm of the Virgin Media network work and is outside of our control, our engineers are working closely with our partners to identify the cause of this issue and bring it to a swift resolution. We apologise to those affected and we will get back to you with an update as soon as we have more information.

Still borked here on the dark side of the Forth :D

loads about 15 secs of any video, plays normally and then just stops, refreshing doesn't do anything.

The YouTube issue over the last few days has been investigated, and we believe a fix has been acheived.
We'll continue to monitor the situation - do let us know if you continue to experience issues.

I am not going to say anything because I'll only get moaned at for being cynical and pessimistic. You can tell from the phrasing and language used in the statement that they haven't rectified the issue at all and have implemented an easy fix which they hope is going to indirectly mitigate/alleviate the symptoms enough that users will perceive it to be a fix and presumably the best they can do :dig:

If you're not going to say anything, then what's this....

If that's not saying something, then I'd hate to see you say something!

Seems as though the issue is actually resolved though. When dealing with network issues, it's not always clear where the problem is, especially when the problem could be your network or someone else's. The wording to me seemed more like they think they've fixed it but don't want to commit to saying it's definitely fixed in case it isn't (Which they have done in the past). Personally, I appreciate the honesty in the message, much rather a "we reckon we've fixed it but please check and let us know" than a "it's fixed, close ticket" when it hasn't been.

Seems like VM just can't win.

that was actually quite good for me. I find it very hard to keep my mouth shut when something is niggling at me.

They can, I just don't like it when they beat about the bush. If what you say is true I would prefer the honesty and something like "there are many reasons why users are experiencing the problems that they are with youtube and we are investigating all avenues. We believe we have discovered a fault which may be the cause of this problem and have implemented a fix for it. Please let us know if this has resolved the issue or if it persists"

Kushan 09-09-2014 10:03

Re: Youtube Dead Again

Their response was more succinct than what you've just given and said pretty much the same thing - who's really beating around the bush?

General Maximus 09-09-2014 12:04

Re: Youtube Dead Again

because when you basically say "we might have fixed it and we might not have" then a more explanatory statement like mine provides greater clarity and serves to put your mind at ease.
