There are probably ways around that though, for example they could split the company into 2 parts, content and distribution, agreeing with the competitions folk that they will then sell the distribution piece?

I do agree though that it's unlikely but the way things are changing you never know

I think the three Sky companies are worth far more when both content and distribution are under one roof; separating them would just take out value.
I could see Sky Europe merging with CanalSat to form the basis of a global satellite business giving the new company market leadership in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Italy. This could provide Fox with an opportunity to sell down its stake, possibly to Canal Sat's major shareholder Vivendi.

I've seen CanalSat speculated before it would certainly make sense.

It's the most sensible industrial combination. I guess the only issue might be the cultural one of joining up two successful organisations - who gets the top jobs, where would the company be based, where would departments like procurement be centralised? That's less of an issue when creating Sky Europe as Sky Italy and Germany are far weaker than BSkyB but CanalPlus is strong and has a very strong shareholder in Vivendi.
