Ok thank you for your answers. I am still stuck on the question that if someone rings another person how long will that keep ringing until the exchange cuts it off?

Like most of the others, that depends on the technology of the exchange at the time.

If it was any sort of electronic exchange, then around 5 minutes. If it was strowger, then possibly it would ring for a very long time, some had timers to cut off calls, some did not.

Thank you for taking the trouble in answering my strange questions. But I think that whatever you tell me and that which you have informed me of is just falling in deaf ears as far as this individual is concerned? He just calls me a liar and sticks to his own story.
I suppose the next step is to find out what type of exchange was at Maldon at the time (1985) I can remember when that exchange had human operators. Anyway thank you all again.:)
