You lose nothing by getting a free trial, and don't forget that Netflix is developing its library. Rights issues are a problem so it won't come all at once, but over a period of a few years we should see some really good content on here.

The American version of Netflix will give you a flavour of what is to come.

I really hope that they do take Sky on over the movies, the amount of money Sky charge for Sky movies is obscene.

I agree, Harry. There is a huge need for some competition here and Netflix have the resources to put into it. My hopes are riding high with this!

I think Sky need to lose their exclusive rights to be able to air movies before anyone else before a provider can 'take them on'

Yes you are rather ;)! I said Sky Movies is apparently rather cheap if you have Sky Sports too?? and it is only seven pounds (I cannot count!) a month for all the Sky film channels if you have Sky Sports too...

Clearly I must be.
If you have the VIP account it is £7 extra a month for the HD, but for mere mortals like myself, £34.25 a month is too much for me to justify

The movies may be cheaper if you have SS, but you then have to pay a large sum for the sports channels. If they can offer Sky movies at £7 (probably to cover the costs of the channels and/or make a minor amount of profit) for SS sports customers, it suggests (to me) they could cut the cost of the movies for non-sports customers too, rather than seemingly rip-off non SS customers who can live without sport but love their movies.
Still, people keep paying it, so they will keep charging it!!!:(

Not entirely sure of the deal they have, but I guess when the current deals are up, Netflix and everyone else will be looking to challenge Sky for the rights then.

Just had a thought, people may lose out by taking a months free trial. If people are already signed up to Netflix, it may be the case that they don't get the expected six month free deal.

It might be worth seeing what VM come up with before signing up on the internet.

Whilst I would love to see Sky squeezed out of the pay movie market (at least), I do wonder if we could see a situation similar to the football contracts. ie competition that was intended to help the consumer has led to a fragmentation of sports rights and an overall increase for the customer to obtain the same amount of sport.

It could have the same effect, but I think it will be slightly different for the movies. I will try and explain my thinking, and I hope everyone can follow my train of thought. For example, I can't justify Sky Movies, but I can justify £10 per month for a trip to Blockbuster to rent 4 movies for 4 nights. (some people may pay £10 for Lovefilm/Blockbuster.com as an alternative.) That way I get to choose what movies (mainly new releases I did not see at the cinema) I want to watch, when I want. I could also squeeze an extra £6 a month for Netflix (if it is not bundled in to XL) from somewhere and have much more content than I would need.

On this basis, my (and possibly others) extra spend will only be £6.

Also customers who have Sky movies will have the option of cancelling the movies and picking up 2/3/4 different subscriptions from (Netflix/lovefilm/wuaki etc) for the same price, but with much more additional T.V. content for a similar price.

For me this is unlike the sports where people have to pay a certain price if they want to watch a sport live. Also, there is no real compettion for Sky in terms of sports. It is only really BT at the moment, unlike movie providers.

Ultimately if bidding wars for movie "rental" rights get too high, I will simply use the cinema and buy DVD/Bluray's from the shops. An option we simply will never from live sports on TV.

That is your view. Being mortal has nothing to do with it imo.

How one chooses to spend one's money is a question of taste once the essentials of life have been purchased. I do not drink and instead I buy sport and movies from VM.

It doesn't matter what pack you are on if you have the sport the movies are only seven pounds per month on top which my point was is good value and I stick with that. That is for the SD versions btw. The HD sport and movies charge is another choice altogether....
