GAY used to mean happy or something like that.

They are planning to use "happy" too, in same context. eg "Ahhh, aren't those to guys happy together"

"What a happy couple they make".

Surely you are not suggesting a happy marriage - there's a thought!

You're coming across just a touch homophobic. Live and let live mate.

The Flintstones theme song touted that when you’re with them you will have a "gay old time".

I used to think this meant harmless fun however the below picture seems to suggest Fred was being indecently assaulted by someone who may, or may not have had tendencies towards the same sex.

Fred is not happy about the whole situation. Fred has a look on his face that suggests, "Yabba Dabba Don't!"

Its Godwin's Law starting to assert itself in the thread

"To think that only yesterday, I was cheerful, bright and gay..."

No it isn't. No comparisons to Nazi Germany here.

Regardless of what is going on in current affairs etc I object to the word itself being hijacked and find this manipulation of the English language repugnant

You may want to learn a bit of history surrounding the word Gay

Quote:

The word had started to acquire associations of immorality by 1637 and was used in the late 17th century with the meaning "addicted to pleasures and dissipations.
Quote:

The use of gay to mean "homosexual" was in origin merely an extension of the word's sexualised connotation of "carefree and uninhibited", which implied a willingness to disregard conventional or respectable sexual mores
Quote:

By the mid-20th century, gay was well established in reference to hedonistic and uninhibited lifestyles
so you see it is by no means a modern "hijacking" of a word
by homosexuals. If anything it is a misuse by straight people
