Whenever VM BB increases speeds it's network always gets screwed up with many not getting anywhere near what they are paying for.

Meanwhile the network, very slowly, gets upgraded to allow for the new speeds and tiers.

Unfortunately by the time that's completed and the dust has settled it all starts over again with yet more speed upgrades and peoples internet experience gets degraded once again.

Why? Well I am surmising but I think it is just VN dragging their feet in the pursuit of their policy of short termism.

In the distant past they or maybe it was Ntl dramatically pruned the staffing levels of the network engineers. Before this they used to carry out a program of scheduled maintenance but I believe that went out the window and they were reduced to just fire fighting.

Given the scale of the upgrades needed for the speed doubling I doubt they have the man power, which would explain the expected completion dates being put back time and time again. But this probably suits VM's cash flow.

ok on changing router here are my thoughts please correct me anyone or add useful information if ok please.

If I change router so dropping the ppp connection (but leaving modem connected and turned on) this will not affect DLM?
Any router that supports pppoe auth with the username set in the hh3 and blank password should work?
Ideally I should set ppp timeout to something like 30 seconds or higher, so a modem resync event or other short lived outage maintains the ip? or is it dhcp timeouts I mess with?
Is the dir615 good enough to route traffic at 80mbit/sec?

Basically my plan is to put in by the end of this weekend maybe today my billion 7402nx gigabit router as the new router so the dir615 is still on VM and maintaining my VM ip (until I update various ACL's). The billion is a nice router but in terms of functionality ddwrt probably does have it beat, I love ddwrt, however the billion has superior hardware to the dir615.

I also am going to activate the superhub for my VM service so us guys who love to debug VM data get to see my connection on the new superhub firmware, then when thats done and I eventually put it in router mode I will decide if will use the dir615 for my infinity or not as the gateway. It will likely be connected regardless as I need more than 4 lan ports, but the question is if it will be just a switch or gateway, dont know yet, may even get a dir825 or something so I have gigabit ddwrt.

The hh3 itself is ok and I see has a ok interface, but I also see I cannot make it respond to pings directly and its limited (like most isp hardware) in functionality. Also I agree with qas the design of the hh3 is light years ahead of the superhub, its much smaller.

tried the 7402nx after a lot of fiddling to get it working the router it seems hasnt got the cpu power to max out the speed cpu at 100% with about 50mbit throughput.

So it looks like I will need to buy a router and until then go back to the HH3.

Mmm that's a sweeping statement from someone who spends his life posting negative comments about VM. As ever completely wrong.

I have left the 7402nx in for now so can do a tbb graph for short time.

I got a asus rt-n16 in now with tomato firmware, getting it flashed was problematic and something still doesnt seem right because after I moved it near the modem and repowered it up, it took nearly 5 minutes for it to come alive again as if it was bricked but not bricked so a 5 minute boot process :eeek:

Now its up it can handle full throughput, but I am curious if anyone knows how to make it have a large pppoe timeout and if that will do things like retain ip on router reboots.

Assuming you used tomatousb - I don't know if this differs from tomato.

When I originally flashed mine I had some strangeness.

IIRC I resolved my issues by erasing NVRAM

(administration/configuration/restore default config/and finally from the dropdown erase all data from NVRam memory

Yeah for some reason DLM didn't bump interleaving onto my line until after I was connected for four whole months without a single connection reset. Maybe the connection uptime counter overflowed and it got confused :p:

I have been saying this for a while (remember a couple years ago I bleated on about how actual web browsing was faster on BT 40Mb than on VM 50Mb, according to OFCOM's national statistics)

For me it was fine up until 20Mb came around, then when TSHTF 50Mb's DOCSIS 3 network came along and solved most of the problems in my area. Unfortunately it's all been downhill from there...

Nope. DLM knows nothing about PPP, it only cares about the layer 1-2 link between your modem and the cabinet.

Yes. With the right firmware it can route at near gigabit speeds. However most firmware doesn't have hardware-accelerated NAT enabled, in which case it can do about 90Mbps on CPU alone but less if you use advanced features, e.g. QoS.

Some routers are just slow at booting up. My WNDR3700, which is the joint-fastest I have, takes several minutes especially after an initial flash, my DIR-825 with the same CPU and same firmware boots in 15 seconds.

I am now very close to the estimated sync I got from BT.

crosstalk on my line has been pretty brutal.

I started off with the full 80/20 and had a attainable sync of 110mbit and 36mbit up.

Then it went down in one go to 90meg down but up stayed at 36meg up.

Then today it went down further to 73meg down (now 71meg sync) and 23meg up. Now actually in danger of going below what I thought was a conservative BT estimate. I rang the BT engineer (got his mobile number) he said has been 5 installs since mine and is a 128 capacity cabinet so potentially over another 120 more to affect my crosstalk his personal etimate is my line will end up around 40mbit.

Yes, I rolled back to 101 after half-a-day trying to get 104 loaded. Maybe I was too impatient..

just had a 2nd homehub3 delivered and remembered my original install date, so whats the guess an engineer will show up to install?

I see BT are now offering up to 160Mbit Infinity if you are in the right area
