please explain - is this a modded firmware for the virgin router?

Yes it's custom firmware that can be flashed to a number of routers.

so whats to stop virgin from reflashing when they send out an update? can this be prevented?

No, this is not modded firmware for the SH.

As the Sh doesn't do PAT the answer is to put the unit into modem mode and add a router of your choice that can do PAT.

Correct, but no more 'complex' than adding a router to a standalone modem.

well i wanted to know if the Shub could PAT, i now do, it doesnt!
