Right - so if what was behind his telly was the driver end of a masthead amplifier setup, and that failed, and took out the masthead unit at the same time, then if he connects a TV directly to the lead coming down from the roof, he should get ... nothing.

May be worth doing that as an experiment, before calling out an aerial man to go on the roof and replace the masthead unit ...
