I see that some of you have already got your Tivo boxes linked ready for multi-room streaming. Would someone like to explain exactly how this is done?

I thought that it would just involve using a couple of Powerline adaptors, but in looking at the website http://www.tivo.com/products/tivo-stream/index.html which RB2004 mentioned in regard to streaminig to remote devices, there is mention of MoCA and clicking on the link to 'What is MoCA?' it states

Note: Wi-Fi and Powerline (also called HomePlug® ) networking are not sufficient for streaming shows reliably. MoCA, on the other hand, provides 170 Mbit/s Net TCP throughput!

So is MoCA required to set up a reliable connection between 2 Tivo boxes?

Not even Blu Ray uses anywhere near that bandwidth. Even the HD channels on VM (broadcasting in MPEG 2) are around the 15 to 17Mb mark. Decent Homeplugs (say, 200Mb at least but you may get away with 85Mb) should be fine.

The current VM TiVo boxes don't support MoCA natively.

Even in the US it's only certain versions of the TiVo boxes that do

And I'm not sure VM would be particularly happy if you started introducing MoCA adapters into their cable network - as they've not been tested for UK cable

Streaming of Live TV from certain channels is - but that feed comes from VM, not from the TiVo box

Am ready, have been for around a year... so glad am not paying the extra £11.50 per month for the extra box that's pretty much sat gathering dust upstairs while we wait on VM being 'ready'!

How are you not paying the 11.50, I can see why you'd have the V+ free but the TiVo?

We got our 2nd TiVo installed before the per box fee came in to force, and the fee was £3 per account. So we pay £3.00 combined on our bill for the 2 boxes.

And we managed to negotiate when renewing our contract to remove the extra set top box fee as part of our loyalty discount for an additional TiVo, so we are not paying the £6.50 per month for that TiVo as we also have a V+ box which we pay the multiroom for.


Would prefer not to use it, would mean sitting in the upstairs bedroom watching it on a smaller TV with no surround sound etc.. would prefer to use it to utilize 6 tuners and play the content downstairs. It was mainly got so we could stream to/from it, as SWMBO could then go upstairs to watch what she wants when I have the footy/PS3 etc on downstairs ;)

So if MoCA can't be used for multi-room streaming, what exactly do I need to do to get set for it?

I presume that when they are ready to introduce it that VM will tell people what needs to be done, but if there is anything that I can do beforehand to set it up, I would be pleased to find out.

All you need to do is connect the boxes via Ethernet to your router

Or you can follow this www.virginmedia.com/powerline if you don't want to run Ethernet cable around your house

We got the same deal. I also don't pay for a 2nd box as when I got TiVO the deal was that I got to have 2nd box for free. At the time of the install this was a V+ but even when I got my 2nd TiVO the "2nd box free" deal discount remained in place.

This has made waiting for multi room streaming a little less tiresome :-)

Got my second TiVo and home network set up months ago, thinking that MRS was 'coming soon'.

:erm:

Anyone seen screenshots of the Fall Update for the TiVo Premiere? One of the many improvements is the ability to name each TiVo on the network, so when VM push out that update (soon I hope), I could name my front room TiVo 'Front Room TiVo' instead of the service number which doesn't mean a lot in the My Shows list.

Some channels seem to be streaming now but a lot aren't. 'Clinton' on PBS streamed OK and at least one other. I'll check for more later.

Home and Really seem to work, but got fed up with checking as most dont ATM.

I think one of the shows that I tried, picked up from where I'd stoped watching on the other Tivo, which is great.

Yes, some Discovery (including HD) and Nat Geo channel programs seem to stream here!

Can also confirm that it remembers where you were on one box, and can resume from the same point on the other box.
