well bearing in mind the shub has "unbeatable wireless performance" I would say the op is pretty screwed then as he clearly is not going to be able to go out and buy another router which will provide a wireless signal upstrairs.


me too, I also like the thread title because I have used the same phrase many a time. Ignore what I was saying above, I was being sarcastic. The truth of the matter is that the shub is anything but super. Vmfriend loves to moan his ass off at me for threads like this because I am spreading bias and negativity. I love them though because they keep popping up and time and time again re-enforcing the fact that the shub is pants and doesnt work for anywhere near the number of customers it should (see how I refrained for claiming it doesnt work full stop :). As Seph has said above, you'll be doing yourself a huge favour buying your own router. I personally am a Linksys fan for the simple fact that they are rock solid, reliable and you just plug them in and they work perfectly.

well I just hope everyone appreciates how damn lucky they are that they have got such an awesome piece of CPE, especially as it is free in most cases. It nearly makes you want to nominate VM for an award.

Or get an access point, as the problems you describe have nothing to do with routers.

I have a VM Shub setup in modem mode connected to one of these. http://www.apple.com/uk/timecapsule/wireless.html
Its a bit on the expensive side but it makes auto backups and has good wifi range. Being Apple its fit and forget, it just works. You can also get a Airport Express to extend your network and plug external speakers or a USB devise.

From the apple web site: Some Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4GHz wireless band, including iPhone, iPod touch and devices using 802.11b/g. Others can use either 2.4GHz or the higher-speed 5GHz band, such as the latest 802.11n-based Mac computers, iPad and Apple TV. Instead of choosing one of the bands, Time Capsule operates simultaneously on both bands, and your multi-band devices automatically use the best available band.

Just a thought it should be renamed the Rubbish Hub. I have been round a friends house who can't connect via WiFi downstairs so can't use his iPhone or iPad while sitting downstairs. He called me after having three VM engineers call to try and sort the problem, the last engineer had a real corker of a reason why he has crap WiFi "Its due to your next doors neighbours hub it is swamping yours" He then changed the channel from auto and left. leaving my friend with rubbish WiFi. :mad:

What's the engineer supposed to do? I get these all the time, I can't tell the customer the hubs a pile of poo

There are many many factors that could be causing the wifi issues. I have 7 other Superhubs in range of mine and have no problems with my signal, even through 2 really thick Glasgow tenement brick walls.

Even things like energy saving lightbulbs can affect wireless performance.

My Friend has a house either side of him one has a BT Hub and the other side they have an Apple Time Capsule. My friend lives in a 5 Bedroomed Barrett box and sitting just under the hub you get one bar to nothing on the iPhone and when you look at other networks both the Apple and the BT Hub are near full strength on the iPhone. If he wants to use the WiFi he has to go upstairs and sit in the room with the SH. As a stand alone unit it is not fit for purpose. IMHO

Ok I hear what you say but VM have sent round three engineers which is costing time and money and no doubt my friend will be calling them out again when he gets back from holiday telling them its not fit for purpose.

Aside from sending an engineer round have they replaced the Superhub at all? For him to get nothing in the room directly below, suggests to me there is a fault with the SH wireless.

No its the same one but the second engineer spent quite some time changing the channels and noted it was being swamped by next door. The third engineer confirmed what the last one found.

I am going to try and talk him into getting a time capsule or airport express or he's going to BT as that works fine.

It's interference from proper routers that swamps the superhub. Having 7 superhubs in range won't make any difference unless they are all in the same room. :D

Maybe the wrong thread, or perhaps I should have started another one, but ......
Reading over on Virgin Community Forums and the number of times VM are sending out replacement SH's is outrageous. I mean not just one, some posters are on number 3 and 4!!
They also seem to send out complete SH kits, when all some people want is a replacement PSU!?!?!?
Really makes you wonder what this is costing VM in real money terms. They should have canned this a long time ago :)
