I am curious as to how you found out? Knowing another ex-member, I can probably guess where you heard it.

Funnily enough, a cousin of mine was a half marathon runner for the Blackheath Harriers. Even after she left the team (she changed jobs and no longer had time for the team meets), she carried on running 5 or 10k a day (mostly through fields), but she only ever spent a maximum of Â£60 on a pair of trainers. Her reason? She tended to get through two or three pairs a year, and she couldn't afford to spend that much on shoes.

She also didn't see any advantage in going far above that price point.

The problem is that Nike, Reebok, Adidas ect. have spend a lot of money making their generic sportswear (that probably wouldn't get much more than Â£30 or Â£40 if marketed as generic sportswear) into fashion items. Hence, they can charge pretty much what they like and people will be stupid enough to buy it.

The sad thing is that they've been spectacularly successful at selling these trainers to exactly the sort of people who probably couldn't afford them via legal means, which probably contributed to the riots last year.
