Re: Intermitent browsing issue

Not yet, but will do later.
I thought I'd check the forums first.
There are few posts on Virgin community boards from others with similar problem in the same area.
I'll post back after I've spoken to Virgin, but I don't have a high expectation...

if u get a support ID number let me know it will be handy to mention it if someone else calls - they refuse to accept its a problem :)

Having the same problem in Edinburgh. Its daft speedtest is saying running full speed yet half the websites are taking dial up time to load

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

Virgin tell me they have had a number of calls from this postcode reporting this problem. They have identified a fault and are currently working on it. They expect it to be fixed in 24-48 hours and have suggested I call back on Saturday if the problem is still ongoing.

Thanks for posting SOSAGES. I'd likely be pulling my kit apart trying to find the issue otherwise.

Let's hope they sort it out. I really don't want to spend another half hour listening to their hold music.

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

That's really bizarre.
I had to wait an age on hold to actually talk to someone but they told me straight away there was a fault flagged up for this postcode.
Afraid they didn't give me a support ID.

I tried to reply to this http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...ys/td-p/762597
but couldn't even get through the registration process so I gave up.

I'll give it 'till Saturday...

A timeout every 10 attempts is 10% packet loss. Anything above 0.5% is bad in my opinion. Anything above 1% can give flaky browsing and anything above 5% is just about unusable.

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

yes, packet loss is a killer
running -n 50 pings generally state packet loss is between 2-10% on average its 4-6%

Here are some of my SamKnows DNS stats from Wednesday late afternoon/early evening (I'm in Clydebank). The figure on the right is the DNS failure rate (as a %):

2011-10-05 19:00:00 42.86
2011-10-05 18:00:00 7.14
2011-10-05 17:00:00 0.00
2011-10-05 16:00:00 7.14

Packet loss stats from this period (%packets lost):

2011-10-05 19:00:00 19.21
2011-10-05 18:00:00 1.23
2011-10-05 17:00:00 11.66
2011-10-05 16:00:00 4.92

And here is my download speed stats from roughly the same period (average Mbps):

2011-10-05 20:00:00 50.68
2011-10-05 18:00:00 50.46
2011-10-05 14:00:00 50.72

Certainly shows no issue with download speeds, but something wrong with DNS. There are other stats too (latency, response times, etc) and they all show as well out of the norm.

Settled down now, though.

SamKnows quite useful after all!

Hi, Mine is worse today in RG12 I spoke to a tech today, who remoted onto my PC and saw the exact problem I am having, which is that some pages wont load, others partially load.

He has said he can't find a problem with my modem, but after looking at tracert's on my machine it seems there may be an issue with the network, so an engineer is coming to look at the green box outside, and my modem on Thursday.

hopefully he can sort it, because it is driving me nuts!

RG12 here too

Getting same issues for about 4 days now

Rang today got told that they know about the issue eta is 12th Oct . and i will get a text when its fixed .. not holding me breath tho ;)

webcache would suggest its masking the problem .. accessing a cache rather than asking the real web to me ...

I think a router or something is dying somewhere that they need to find

Fred_Smith 09-10-2011 11:01

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

Just got an automated phone call, tech has been cancelled!!! WTF

Oh well changed all my computers to use the cache all working.....for now btw the cache is 'the web'

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

Still no good for me. Web is unusable.
Another call to Virgin (sigh). Why do I feel this will run and run?
I guess it's time to dig out the old Sky router.
It may be slow but at least it's usable.
So I am currently paying Virgin £20 per month for a worse service than I get from sky for free. How does that work then?
