I posted 2 things off of the ITV2 HD website and it does not say a exclusive deal anywhere? It did before when they first were put up but it has now been changed?

Thats bit like asking why digitise a photo taken in 70's to display on your 'hi-res' monitor, when in fact the monitor has not yet been invented to fully justify a quality photo

I'd guess 'none' of it was recorded digitally ('SD' by your definition) and that most of it was recorded on film/video tape which would not only stand being converted to be broadcast at todays lousy 1080i digital res but in the case of actual "films" could be scanned at as much as 5000 before broadcast PQ stops improving, so you will need to wait along time before you get chance to see those films in their full glory

While many of the classic shows from the 60s and 70s were shot on film and could be rescanned in HD, have any of them actually been rescanned for ITV? I thought they were broadcasting from the same old PAL videotape and upscaling it.

Who knows what res they scanned them in the first place & if they're showing them directly from tape they'd easily upscale it to HD, but either way they would benefit from being shown in HD. The 'old PAL videotape' still captured faaaaaaaaar more detail than lousy 1080 res we are being treated to at the mo

I've seen a few of the old Sean Connery Bond movies in HD on my telebox and they are clearly much better than in SD

Yes there is quite a lot reasonable programming there.

Really? What resolution would you expect to get from the tapes commonly in use when film prints of Batman, The Professionals, The Saint etc were being copied over (I'm assuming the tape format would be Betacam, or one of its successors)? So far, I've not been able to find any source that suggests that family of professional recording/mastering tapes was capable of capturing resolution in excess of 1080. Discussion of quality regarding those formats seems to revolve around the composite recording technique, which AFAIK would not improve the resolution of the image.

Again, the question is, have they gone back to the original prints and remasterd the broadcast tape, or are they upscaling? If the former then it's no surprise it looks better. If the latter then all well and good, but as you can get home equipment that does a perfectly competent job of upscaling, it draws us back to the original issue ... What, really, is the advantage in having an HD version of a channel on your EPG when that channel's output consists largely of upscaled SD programmes?

The main point should be,

If you get them and they're free do you really care if some of the content is not HD?

I was really disappointed recently when ITV broadcast the original Star Wars trilogy. All 3 were broadcast in 4:3 and were clearly not HD. I couldn't believe how terrible it looked. It's 2011 ITV, not 1985!

ITV 4 HD shows cycling , motorsport , Darts , football , films in HD , ITV2 HD has a decent amount of HD , but I agree ITV3 HD can be patchy. I personally like having them as theirs sport and movies in HD plus I find it handy to be able to record a show when repeated on ITV2 HD when a clash occurs on its original airing on ITV1 HD.

I think you need three recordable tuners. Have you heard about Virgin Tivo..... ?

:D

Who needs ten million HD channels when you have three recordable tuners? ;):D
