I've been wondering about this for years. When I was younger and in another century, the speculation tended to arrive during the trial and AFTER sentencing not before.

If there was enough evidence to substantiate charges and to hold her on remand I wonder what has changed?

Well we could speculate that the attacks have continued whilst she was in custody..:erm:

I wondered that. Could it be they expected more evidence that failed to materialise? Were they under pressure to look like something was being done so charged to early? A combination of both maybe?

This part is interesting:

Rebecca Leighton also faced one charge of theft of medication belonging to the hospital. This charge has also been discontinued. Mr Afzal said: "While there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction on this charge, we have decided it is not in the public interest to proceed as Rebecca Leighton would be likely to receive a nominal penalty given the time she has already spent in custody."
This leads me to speculate that the evidence they had was she had unauthorised access to the saline stores and then made a seemingly obvious connection to the murders but didn't actually have evidence that she contaminated them.

I think the main problem is

Lawyers representing Ms Leighton said on Friday the case against her was "weak" at a bail application made on her behalf in August.

They said Mr Justice Henriques had told the court the evidence against Ms Leighton amounted to her fingerprints being on a saline bag, which had been damaged by a needle.

Although the plea for her to be given bail was rejected at that hearing, her lawyers said the judge accepted "many people" had access to the saline bags and the fluid and that Miss Leighton had every reason to be touching the items in her role as sister.

That's all they had

I think they had that and also that she had stolen some medical supplies. If so it sounds weak. I hope she sues all the newspapers (and I think it is all of them).

There really needs to be a significant change in media reporting, its gotten totally out of control, we're fast reaching the point where it may well prove impossible to even try people, guilty or not, as they will have been completely 'tried by media' before they even step into a courtroom and no judge would be able to get them a fair trial.

*IF* that's all they had I think the CPS lawyer who authorised the charges needs a serious slap.

If I were her I'd sue their asses off, and I'm not a big believer in 'compensation culture' this would be an exception.

That's a lot of insider info the Daily Mail has there..I wonder who revealed such sensitive info?

Quote:

A police source told The Mail on Sunday last night: ‘The entire investigation has been fraught with difficulties but it is believed that there may be at least two individuals responsible. One of them, a man, has already been spoken to by detectives and his fingerprints are on one of the pivotal damaged sets of saline solution.
I suppose we should be at least pleased that no names have been revealed.

That does. Remember that woman who was murdered at Christmas? I was reading in Private Eye that the police did have a suspect. Sky got hold of his name, and drummed up so much publicity with it that had he gone to court, there was no way he would have got a fair trial.
