They probably should make it optional, both for those who are deaf and want to view programs at normal times and those who do not need it. Guess the bigwigs won't shell out for it.

Making it optional would require the broadcasting two channels. Either that, or zooming the picture so that the signer was cut off.

There have been demonstration systems where the STB software rather than a person does the signing, but that's way beyond the capabilities of current STBs.

Well you could, but the broadcasters are still required to provide some signed linear content.

Don't forget not everybody can get On Demand.

Could they not overhaul whatever they use for interactive overlays like the Red Button to add a signer to the regular stream? Surely it would be a great advantage to a large number of people, especially more than 'silly' things like 3D. (Obviously not from a manufacturers POV, but to a significant amount of consumers)

I don't think VM's current software supports the kind of overlays required. Even if it did, a lot (if not all) of VM's current STBs would not be powerful enough to do it.
