You cant give a referendum on something thats already passed into law, (you can thank blair and brown for that). All you can do is call a referendum on repealing the treaty but doing that has consequences, Once passed into law for all member country's the treaty becomes a requirement of membership of the EU. So a referendum on repealing the treaty would effectively bee a referendum on exiting the EU which is WAY more then they agreed.

It should also bee pointed out that a referendum on the treaty was NEVER an election pledge as they VERY publically announced the change on their policy when the treaty was passed into UK law in December (way before the election)

Are we reduced to name calling now?

Yes I'm a believer - in democracy and the sovereignty of the UK, hence my delight at our democratic right to decide being enshrined in law and our sovereignty clearly and unequivocally stated.

Regarding a referendum on Lisbon in case you didn't notice it has already been made law largely through the efforts of the Labour party who I suspect you have a somewhat more positive view of.

I have written to the Prime Minister and as you would note if you read a little more of this forum before describing me as a sucker linked to a page campaigning for a referendum. I want a referendum not on Lisbon but on UK membership to the EU and feel we would be far better served within the EFTA. Certainly Norway, Switzerland, etc, have done rather well within that group. As has been explained to you already a referendum on Lisbon would be a referendum on EU membership.

News flash: just because I like a lot of the things that this coalition does, such as this, doesn't mean that I support everything they do or think that they can't do some things better. It's called having one's own opinions rather than being blindly loyal to a particular political ideology or party or, as would perhaps be more appropriate for yourself, blindly hating another.

As someone who started primary school less than 5 years after they switched to metric teaching, I wish the government would just finish the job and switch everything over to the 'new' system to be honest.

I can appreciate it's a pain for those who were brought up on imperial measures, but the fact is, they have been teaching exclusively metric for a long time now. In fact, nobody under 40 in the UK is likely ever to have been taught imperial measures at school.

Well you got that wrong..'cos I'm not a Tory believer at all.

In fact I don't trust any MP further than I can chuck them and those I might just believe in I can count on the fingers of one hand..and they come from across the board politically.

However I am one of those who voted in the original and only referendum we ever had on the ECC which was worded to ask if we wanted to be part of an organisation based on economics and trade.AT no time did it mention or was worded to mention anything of a federal Europe.IF it had it would have been a completely different story politically.

So I definitely would support this action if it does protect our sovereignty.

Correct. We were misled then and have been ever since.

Lickspittle ... truly one of the finest words in the English language. Deployed with devastating effect at the US Senate by none other than George Galloway, cf. "Lickspittle Republican committee" :D

I'm guessing it'd have been even more devastating if they'd known what it meant... :D

No you're wrong - anyone who doesn't believe in Same Old Labour's 'Viv Nicholson' approach to 'government' is an evil Tory toff with a lavish country pile furnished with a moat and a duck house... :D

I can't afford a soft pile rug let alone a country pile and the closest I get to a moat and a duck house is my bath tub and a rubber duck.

If I'm going to get the rep could I at least get the trappings of wealth that go with it?

Please every time you mention duck houses I lose it..that was my MP for 30+ years and I'm so cross that it wasn't his uselessness as an MP that got us rid of him but the Expenses debacle.

here here ;)

any one who thinks going back to these would be good is well and truely living in the past lol

http://www.johnowensmith.co.uk/histdate/measures.htm

as to this sovereignty law its just a bit of window dressing to keep those who think we should be out of europe quiet though it seems to be failing ( some one else can find the quote lol ) as even the Daily Mail ( it was the only paper at the wacky wearhouse ) was moaning that this may in fact even make it easier for europe to impose laws ( not that i agree with the idea that it does ) but it definately wont do what those who want out want ;)
