Agreed there's no perfect solution but at least my way means that the team actually doing the best at the time wins as opposed to what might have been the case had there been a few more holes played. Under the current rule you could be 8 up with 9 to play and it'll be called a draw. Don't see how that's fairer - it's far more likely that the team ahead at the time would go on to win than the team so far behind would stage a miraculous recovery.

But where would you draw the line? Awarding a win to a player one up with 17 to play would be very unfair or one up with any number to play in fact, the same with a two or three hole lead as we saw today can be easily turned around. I think calling the match a draw is probably the easiest way to do it as its seems unlikely anyone would have a seven or eight hole lead without it being an unassailable lead in such a high quality tournament.

As I said, there's no perfect solution whatever you do in such situations. Of course matches can be turned around (Greg Norman knows all about that ;) )but I still think my suggestion's fairer because at least it's based on actual scores (albeit not over the full 18 holes) and for every match that might have gone the other way if it had proceeded to the 18th, there'll be another which wouldn't have.

In a way it's similar to the golden goal concept in football in which the first team to score wins (even though had play continued for a fixed period as with traditional extra time, the other side may have come back and won the match).

But a golden goal only takes place after the regulation time has been completed. The situation you are describing would be more like blowing the whistle after 60 minutes.

Look at Fowler today, Molinari was 3up with 4 to play and then 2 up with 2 to play and the match ended in a half.
