Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder

Hello Spiderplant,
Thanks for your reply to my question about copying recorded progs from my v+ box.
The make of my dvd recorder is Toshiba dvr19dtkb2. I bought this particular machine to enable me to copy all my old videos onto dvd. It's great for this as all I have to do is put a video in one side and a blank dvd in the other side, press a button and the machine does the rest. Then I thought about the "Copy to dvd" function on my v+ box and was very excited about that as I have a load of old recordings that I don't want to delete, but of course the free space is always reaching critical.
I wondered if my recorder being a video to dvd copier may not do the job.
Anymore suggestions would be very much appreciated. Cheers Viv :)

I can't find the manual for your recorder, Viv, but from the specs it looks like it should be able to do it. As with JK, you probably need a SCART lead from the VCR socket on the V+ to the second SCART socket on the recorder (maybe called AV2 or EXT2). Then somehow in the recorder menus you need to tell it to record from this socket to DVD. Unfortunately without the manual I can't tell you exactly what you need to do.

Can you check how you've got it connected and report back?

I'll do that Spiderplant, may be a few days but I'll give it another go and let you know exactly how I've connected the two and if I've made any progress.
Thanks so far for your help.

Thanks Spiderplant for you promt reply,
I'll try the cabling as you say. I'm just wondering how i can select the recordeing source as EXT2?? I don't have a co-axil aerial input and when i try to tune in to pick up a recording source it can't select any channels. I take it it its teh scart that carries teh signal??
I'll try your cableing probably tomorrow evening and getback to you. Fingers crossed, good luck to you too Viv, hope your successful?
Cheers JKMurray

Yes, the SCART carries the signal. You need to press the SOURCE button on the remote repeatedly until the display shows "EXT2". Then either press REC to record onto the recorder's hard drive or DVD REC to record straight to DVD.

As soon as you've started recording, you can tell the V+ to begin the Copy to DVD.

In case you've lost the manual for your DVD recorder, you can download a copy from http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/d...05_dfu_eng.pdf

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder

Spiderplant,

SUCCESS!!!!:) I went through the cabeling and tuning via the source menu and managed to get programmes off my V+ onto the DVDhd. Quality wasn't great but this was due to being on LP, changed to HQ and it's great.
Thanks you for you info and patience. Now all I need to do is find the time to transfer 78hrs of programmes onto DVD:D.
Thanks again.

You also need to check your DVDR manual carefully; I was also having problems but eventually realised that the "input" on the DVDR I was using was in fact only an output!

I now use a scart at the V+ end and phono input to the front panel of the DVDR

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder

For a couple of years, I've had a Sony RDR HXD995 DVD Recorder (with multi region playback) hooked up to a Samsung SMT-2110C Virgin Media Set Top Box.

This worked perfectly with no problems at all. I could set the stb to change channels and the DVD recorder to record the programmes. I could watch discs and record channels simultaneously. When I stopped watching a disc, the TV picture would come on automatically. If I was watching TV and wanted to switch to a recording saved to the Sony's hard drive, it was a one click operation.

That was then.

Unfortunately I allowed Virgin to talk me into upgrading my stb to a Virgin V BoxHD. As with many other posters in this thread, I've tried every Scart/HDMI permutation under the sun and cannot record from the V BoxHD – in fact I can't even see the Sony menu on the TV screen unless I reconfigure the Virgin box connection from HDMI to Scart. What I have at the moment is just the possibility of watching (but not recording) programmes saved on the Sony hard drive or watching DVDs – but to do either means reconfiguring the V BoxHD each time from HDMI to Scart. And then reconfiguring it BACK to watch the TV.

Virgin customer support is utterly useless – all they have done is offered me a TiVo (which is no good either as that assumes that everyone wants to watch everything they record AT HOME, whereas I record to DVD-R to watch on frequent flights and train journeys). In fact, Virgin they say they can't even swap the new V Box HD back to the old Samsung box for me, so I guess I'm absolutely shafted unless any tech wizard out there has a solution to the connection issue which will enable me to use the Sony + V BoxHD in the same way that I used the Sony + Samsung.

The other thing I thought of was buying a Samsung SMT-2110C on eBay, but then I'd need a new Virgin smart card and activation, wouldn't I..? I'm sure I can't just stick the current V Box HD smartcard inside an old Samsung stb?

HELP!

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder

You hdmi from vhd to tv, scart from vhd box to av2 on recorder, scart from av1 of recorder to tv.

To watch the vhd the tv should be Set to hdmi. To set a recording or watch dvds put tv to scart, your recorder should be on av2 ready to record.

Service technicans still carry samaung 2110s, it can be done to go back

Wow - superfast response, many thanks indeed. Will try it over the weekend.

I know the service technicians still carry the 2110s, but Virgin Customer Support say they will NOT reinstall them as they are being phased out.

Just a quick query, if I may - does the above solution allow me to watch TV while recording or to watch programmes saved to the DVD hard drive while recording another? The Samsung did, but I'm slightly concerned by possible limitations of having to switch to HDMI for TV and then to Scart for DVD recorder... :(

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder

It should act as before, except you now have to manually switch between scart and hdmi on the tv. If your recorder is recording freeview then hdmi will work for cable. If your recording cable then you can watch what your recording or watch freeview
