What exactly is 'line rental' anyway? Is it some form of unnessary tax that is just being dragged along into the 21st century because no one has questioned it?

I rent a line from where to where.

it pays for the upkeep of the line from the exchange /green box or whatever to your house otherwise you would be responsible for any repairs to it in effect you are quite literaly renting it of your supplier for your personal use ..just like a house

Seems rather steep to me for its purpose. How often in your lifetime of renting this line is it likely to get damaged! Certainly not £11-£12 pounds worth a month.

Seems well worth it to me, ah well... C'est la vie.

Time to get a large stick and start bashing the lines methinks :) i would like to see sparks on the floor like they have in hurricane affected places.

Re: Free VM landline to VM mobile calls

They have probably made a deal with the orange-T-Mobile group to offer discounted termination fees from the Virgin Media network.

T-Mobile-Orange won't mind this because it boosts there market share (If) the techinique works. More subscribers means more revenue.

T-Mobile work better with Virgin Media in comparison to other phone firms, BT for example is always having disputes with T-Mobile as seen in consultations opened by Ofcom. And most of this is about termination rates.

A similar offering cheap calls to mobiles could be by BT to Hutchison 3G(3 Network) mobiles. Why do I think that? Because BT and 3 are on this thing about getting rid of mobile termination rates and to just prove a point, BT and 3 could copy this idea. We've already seen 3 offer free 3 to 3 calls as well as Free voicemail and Free Skype to Skype calls. Skype on 3 handsets can be used just like a normal voice call. So calling 3 handsets via skype either from a computer or another 3 handset is completely free.

Its a good move by 3 as the sound quality and performance of Skype on 3 handsets is perfect, however, it makes me laugh because 3 and BT are campaigning against high termination rates when BT has the highest telephone line rental and 3 has the highest mobile termination fees on UK mainland.

3 charge around 5p per minute termination fees, Virgin Media charges us nearly 20p per minute plus nearly 10p connection to call 3 phones, BT charge around the same. Pay As You Go services providers such as Orange charge 20p per minute. So the people who are really ripping us off is all the other. There is no reason to charge such high fees anymore and 5p per minute charged by 3 is nothing in comparison to what other service providers are charging us. The other networks charge around 3p to 4p termination rates and the other providers charges as much as 20p per minute for call such numbers, termination fees are nothing really, its just the service providers we use for calling mobiles charging us nearly 4 times as much as the termination fee!!!

Sort of - the price change page http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginm...ce-changes.php has this:

Please note that new activations (e.g. new connections or numbers ported into Virgin Mobile) may take up to 72 hours to be recorded by our landline billing systems. Calls made prior to the number being recorded will be charged at the standard rate.

Just to clarify. This is for all telephone packages is it?

BenMcr 01-02-2010 17:37

Re: Free VM landline to VM mobile calls

Yes - you get the calls appropriate to your phone package. i.e. Weekends/Evening & Weekends/Unlimited

Re: Free VM landline to VM mobile calls

It's a residential thing only - as Virgin Mobile don't offer business mobiles
