No, Sarkozy and Merkel will stitch him up like a kipper. When your only backers are Gordon Brown and Silvio Berlusconi it's probably all over bar the shouting. I quite like the look of John Bruton personally, he's got the right pedigree, being a former Vice-President of the EPP bloc which Sarkozy and Merkel are in (but not our Tories, who prefer fringe d*ckheads from eastern Europe).

You also have to remember that no one on the left in Europe will back Blair because of Iraq, while most of the right will back whoever Sarko and Merkel want (which isn't Blair) so his chances were always fairly slim. Whoever's been pushing his candidacy* has amazingly managed to end up embarrassing Gordon Brown without much effort. Fancy that.

* T. Blair, one suspects.

It's not so much that it's Tony B or anyone of the other numerous likely candidates. What I mind is that we step closer to a federal Europe without any of the millions of Europeans actually having a vote as to whether they want a federal Europe.

It will never happen Maggy. If it did, Blair will sell the EU down the river alongside us.

I think BBKing`s post is right, he will get stitched up.

But, with Gordon the great`s recomendation, he`s guaranteed not to be elected.

Excuse me but it will..There IS going to be a permanent President of the EU and it will be another step towards a federal Europe. It won't be TB but it will be one of many possibilities..So be very afraid....

I want to be part of a loosely affiliated European common market yes but not a European State.

With you Maggy i have no problem with a free trade setup in europe but the idea of a federal europe sends shivers down my spine and isn't a good thing for any of us.

We already have many EU presidents, blair would not become THE president of the EU

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preside...ean_Commission

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preside...ean_Parliament

Blair would be President of the European Council

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preside...ropean_Council

The presidency of the EU would still, as is now, be shared by member state leaders

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preside...European_Union

We're still a way off from becoming a federalised super state.

It's just more jobs for the boys

Given the history of the UK in Europe it beats me why anyone would think that Bliar will get the job. The French and Germans would never accept it for one thing. It's far more likely to go to a faceless Belgian than Bliar... That aside, Brown's recent vote of full confidence is bound to be the nail in this particular coffin - I mean, everything he touches turns to brown, sticky, smelly stuff...

I wish you lot would stop worrying about Blair,it's not him that I'm scared of especially as no one else among the members wants him apart from GB.He's got no chance.Just worry who else it could be.It's been OK just having them take turns for 6 months at a time.5 year stints will be disastrous and it's still a step nearer to a federal Europe.

Sorry but maybe someone could explain why we need an EU president who has no power and no authority over member states ( or at least that is what I understand it....maybe wrong but ....). Is this not another jobs for the boys ?

The Presidency of the EU will continue to be six months and be member state leaders.

No one is mentioning 5 years stints for that.

Really? Then someone should be telling the Labour party that because that's not what I heard on the Today programme in a discussion a couple of days ago between a labour rep and Mr Hague...

As I mentioned earlier, what Presidency were they discussing?

There are several Presidencies within the EU structure.

President of the European Commission
President of the European Parliament
President of the European Council
President of the European Union

I'm all for blair getting the job as there would be more likelihood of a crazed lunatic* having a pop at him. :)

*Actually being a crazed lunatic is not a requirement ...
