Many years ago, I seem to remember a proclamation that for the first time The British Isles was self sufficient in the production of food. Whatever happened to that? I heard of farmers being paid to leave land fallow?

Would need a major change in the way that land is used. At the moment the choice of crops to grow seems to be based on whatever gets the best EU subsidy rather than what people actually want to eat.

You are right of course. I completely forgot about CAP. Crazy Agricultural Policy.

We were self sufficient in food, it was cheap and Farmers earned a good living.

Then we joined The Common Market (as it was) and in this new realm of wine lakes and beef mountains, food prices all went up, Farmers started to go out of business, land lay fallow and we start to import food again.

WOW! I guess that's progress then. Thanks a bunch Mr Heath.
