Re: Web Host (Re-Sellers) Linux WANTED
I've been looking at http://www.hostdime.co.uk anyone have first hand knowledge? I've tried to read reviews but most were 2006-2008. They have UK phone number & are part of a USA large firm.
Other option is 1&1 Virtual Server.... cost £14.99 PCM but only 30 Domains allowd (is that 30 Sites? or 30 domains inc Parked?) I have a site with 5x Domains (.com, .co.uk, .tv & so on), so if I parked them on the Main site would it count as 1 or 5? |
Re: Web Host (Re-Sellers) Linux WANTED
I was with Hostdime for just over a year, the first few months on a reseller package, as it's a shared resource I found my sites dropping down with php/sql errors most nights due to others abusing the resources..
I then moved to thier VPS service (no domain limits), managed to get a good deal which cost me $40 a month, was happy with the service apart from it being a bit limited with memory and only 15Gb disk space (remember that includes the OS installation). Found thier helpdesk good and the forums also good. Eventually moved to VM business when I realised I could get a 10Mb cable business connection and host my own server and still cost the same as the VPS and ADSL combined |
Re: Web Host (Re-Sellers) Linux WANTED
Whats the advantage of VPS vs ReSeller? Thanks Kymmy for the ifo on PHP/MySQL. My sites are mostly PHP, but only use "include" tags (not like PHPBB Forums, MySQL & other stuff). Would this affect me also?
I use PHP include in all pages to include the Navbar & other stuff on sites. |
Re: Web Host (Re-Sellers) Linux WANTED
The anything like php/tags/mysql and even standard web pages will time out if resources get limited.
A reseller account you tend NOT to have shell access and the totall server CPU/MEM can be hogged by someone running scripts, where a VPS is a single powerfull machine that is split between a few users, the VPS software then running on the server gives each user root access to thier own individual area and thier own resources. One user can NOT therefore use resources that another user wants to use. In the end it's like having a dedicated server but which is slightly limited (for example you can't easily update the kernel..) |

You get the full WHM in that one so it's quite good, price is £230 for the whole year, so not sure if you want to exceed your budget, but it's managed as well so if you have any problems - they will sort it out for you, support has always been nice for me. |

Re: Web Host (Re-Sellers) Linux WANTED
How so? If the shell is jailed there is no access to anything of meaning, just the ability to run scripts, which assuming all permissions are set correctly have little chance of doing anything harmful
|
Re: Web Host (Re-Sellers) Linux WANTED
No - Jailed access - is still SSH - somebody, that knows what they are doing can still cause some serious damage, on a shared system - I;ve seen it before, a client, who has a dedicated box from us, gave his client Jailed SSH and the client really went to town on the box. It's a serious security risk.

Re: Web Host (Re-Sellers) Linux WANTED
They obviously hadn't locked it down very well then
|
Re: Web Host (Re-Sellers) Linux WANTED
No they hadn't, they allowed the user to excute files out of his "public_html" even if a box is locked down well, the more "secure" it becomes the less it is usable as a web hosting box.

Re: Web Host (Re-Sellers) Linux WANTED
Spoken to sales at http://www.webhosting.uk.com & they recomended me start with ReSeller http://www.webhosting.uk.com/reseller-hosting.php
Saves me getting out of budget & a VPS server. |
