Re: vista re-install

thanks for all your help everyone i will let you know how i get on tommorrow
just as a matter of interest i have just spoke to my brother who works in i.t and he said that the law is changing or has changed to force retailers to supply the installation disks for new pc's and do away with this hidden partition carry on

Re: vista re-install

well the hidden partition carry on does work well as in theory it does not take long to recover. I think the softwar eis lacking though. I just set up a system using Acronis True Image ( normally use ghost but it was playing up) this creates an image similar to a recovery and adds an option to enter recovery during boot up ( very smart) . Problem with the PB system is its not a fully finished installation they back up so it overwrites the files but then still has to do stuff this imo is flawed . They would only have to set up one machine all the way back it up then create clone drives for all the other machines of this model still you cant expect them to think lol. IMO they should have a recovery of some sort and provide OS disc and Drivers

i think that's the way it's going to work they will still use partitions but also supply a disk
another thought i had regarding my case is should i format the 'c' drive using norton ghost (which i have )before installing the vista copy ,once installed i could use ghost to create a new image on 'd' drive ,will this work?

Re: vista re-install

many thanks to all who contributed to solving my problem ,it's all sorted now
i downloaded a copy of vista (didn't matter which one as all versions are on disk)and just used the activation key that came with pc
as a side note the instalation is much faster this way as you don't get any crapware that manufactures put on and always comes through with a re-install from a partition so having avoided that there is much less junk on the pc and concequently much faster
once again many thanks to all

PC World would have charged to look at it, and then charged to fix it - when they could fit it in. They are quite pricey, and not terribly efficient.
