Re: Pandemic Flu - This one could be for real......

I do not understand why this is being dismissed by some. As SMG said more people were killed by the bird flu in 1918 than died in WWI. Are we really that arrogant that we think we are untouchable? If we were to have an outbreak of this in this country and we carried on being arrogant it would just spread and spread with the possibility of killing a lot of us.

If what Bender says is true then I personaly think we have quite a bit to be worried about

So we have something to rival bird flu's supposed full-blown scale, except this one, provided the thing doesn't spread beyond the Atlantic, shouldn't make its way to Europe. If it does, you can bet it'll be in the UK within a week.

Its killing otherwise healthy people I do not think eating an orange will help much ;)

Yesterday a British Airways cabin crew member was taken to hospital with flu-like symptoms after returning from Mexico City.

But a spokesman for Northwick Park Hospital in London said tests confirmed he did not have the deadly strain.

If we start to get get cases in the UK the best anyone can do is stock up on food, bottled water and stay at home. You may as well forget work.

From the BBC article -
"The fact that all the cases in the US have so far produced mild symptoms is encouraging. It suggests that the severity of the Mexican outbreak may be due to an unusual geographically-specific factor - possibly a second unrelated virus circulating in the community - which would be unlikely to come into play in the rest of the world.
However, the fact that many of the victims are young does point to something unusual. Normal, seasonal flu tends to affect the elderly disproportionately. "

OMG all this time i thought the new world order was the conspiracy of idiots but how wrong was i this proves it beyond all doubt . While this is serious and could get a lot more i don't think it is time to panic just yet and i think i will wait a while before i start to overly worry about this. Same as always keep an eye on developments but don't go cancelling anything just yet :).

Might well treat flu but could lead to turning odd

But the World Health Organisation says the findings of the latest study are far from conclusive and there needs to be more research into the area.

Oscar McLaren filed this report.

OSCAR MCLAREN: The Australian Government is among many worldwide which have built up stockpiles of the drug Tamiflu, in case of a bird flu pandemic.

But researchers in Japan say they've found a statistical link between use of the drug and unusual behaviour in young people.

They refer to cases of children trying to jump off balconies and of hopping on one foot.

If it happens it happens. There isn't really much you can do to avoid it unless you happen to have an bunker in the back garden with air filters.

Bender i wouldn't worry about it too much they used to be called neps (national emergency plans) don't know what they are called now but they have always happened and the allocation of land for mass graves has also been something that has happened for at least 80 odd years so tell her to relax lol. Yes Zing i have seen the stand and others like it but we really need to keep some perspective and not get overly worried by every little thing. If it does turn out to be very bad i hope i don't get it till after july as my brother is buying me a 5870X2 and i would like a few days playing on it before croaking :).

Re: Pandemic Flu - This one could be for real......

Aren't the comparisons between present day flu strains and the 1918 epidemic a bit over the top? In 1918 the population had been ground down by 4 years of war, and medical treatment then wasn't what it is now.

Edit: Typo
