I'm only using it hard wired so far. The N range wireless is one reason I want to get this working correctly.

If your router is using a different external IP to connect to the internet, than your laptop is when connecting direct then you will definately have a different speed.

It's likely some auto configure thing gone wrong.

Connect with your old linksys or laptop direct
Write down the:
mac address
(this is the unique ethernet address the VM modem expects to see)

dns address
( this is where to lookup dns queries should be 194.168.4.100)

subnet mask
(255.255.255.252 for me)

default gateway
( this should be a 192.168.X.X number = local network router if not direct,
or a real external ip 86.17.X.X.X )

this will be in the router under status or setup or admin.
in windows xp you can find this from a command window with: ipconfig /all

Then manually enter those details into the netgear.
Your router should have two IP numbers it's local network address and it's external IP number which is given to it by VM
(after it reads the mac address).

For instance you'll need to tell it to spoof (pretend) to have the mac address of your laptop. It'll be something like 01:AB:CD:23:34:21.

This way VM will assign your router a good IP.

Also turn off wireless for now, one less detail.
Make sure you are plugging the modem into the uplink port of the router.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply.

I wasn't able to get any connection by hard coding IPs etc but did when changed MAC addresses to that of laptop and Linksys device. However, still getting speeds of around 1Mbps.

I have even restored factory settings and re-installed. The only thing I noted was when the device looks for current configuration it did not note I had a router already. Not sure if it did for anybody else.

Back to the Linksys for now!

Raised a new call with Netgear last Wed - was being escalated to senior supervisor but still waiting!

I am thinking of downgrading back to 20 MB. Where do people think this will leave me re: refund on installation and modem (that is not fit for purpose of me)?

I got the router WNR2000 and the USB adapter but both boxes is not open yet (unopen) because I give my 50Meg a try out for 7 working days before can decide myself to kept 50Meg or cancel it and walk away from virgin media. Because the 50Meg cable modem and the router/usb might have go back to virgin if I did cancel my 50Meg within 7 working days.

Has an email from Netgear this am to say they have closed my call as they replied and no reply from me so assuming it is fixed. Their reply was to say they had escalated to a supervisor - and nothing since.

Call re-opened but loosing patience.....

Hi i have the same router but i also have the wn111v2 usb 2.0 adapter however i am having problems when this adapter is left plugged in, because when i boot up my pc (dell e521) the pc stalls or hangs at boot up and fails to boot or leave the dell boot screen, the only option is to switch the pc off again unplug thye adapter (wn111v2) and switch the pc back on again, then plug in the adapter, which is annoying since myt other usb devices i dont have to do this.

any thoughts on a fix?, ive emailed netgear just waiting for them to get back to me, my pc has the up to date bios and running vista 32bit 4gb ram

Can you check that when you plug the laptop in to the router it auto-negotiates the correct wire speed? If you are XP just left click on the network icon in the system tray.

You should be connected at 100mb full duplex to the router. If the laptop has gigabit ethernet, make sure jumbo frames is disabled. Also check the MTU is not too high.

If the router has the facility, check that it is connected to the modem at the right speed too (again, 100mb full duplex).

If you have two computers, you can connect one to the WAN side and one to the LAN side of the router and try transferring files or just using something like iperf to check the transfer speed.

The router you have should be capable of 70, maybe 80mb with a very low number of connections. With P2P and 500+ connections it might just hit 50mb. Probably the best bet for 50meg would be to get a Buffalo router and run Tomato on it. Buffalo routers can hit 98mb under realistic conditions, as they are design for use on Japanese 100/100 fibre. I have two and can confirm they work as advertised.

RESULT!

I was checking above and all looked OK then remembered TCP Optimiser. After resetting back to initial defaults obtained the above. No idea what was the incorrect setting but working OK now.
