Re: Nurse suspended for offering to pray for patient's recovery

thats very sad. some organisations and companies will bend over backwards to accomodate staff religion but others are just to pc for there own good.

Well done to First Bus on respecting a persons religion as they had a driver who refused to drive a bus with an atheist poster on it, they did not discipline him they got him a different bus without the poster on it.

Its a sad reflection on times that somebody should be told off for praying and being caring.

No, but this is the only time that someone's called the Trust about it.

And hopefully the publicity will shame the trust in to changing their policy.

Perhaps the trust have not heard of religious freedom?

What is Religious Freedom?

History has been marked by religious wars and conflicts, in the name of one set of beliefs or another, for centuries; people have been persecuted, hunted, tortured and killed as a result of their wish to believe what they want to. Now, as a civilised society, we have learned to accept that every person has a right to follow whichever path they choose without fear of reprisal.

This right was re-confirmed under Article 9 of The Human Rights Act 1998. This specifically states, ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and observance.’

The Act gives you the right to be protected from discrimination as a result of your chosen beliefs; whether you follow Christianity, Spiritualism, Judaism, Buddhism (to name a very few) or if you wish to follow the religion of the Ancient Eqyptians or Romans. It also gives you the tacit right to follow that religion in your public or private life and to teach others who may wish to know more. This is the very essence of religious freedom.

Actually, I remember a study (that I can't bl**dy well find atm  ) which demonstrated that those hospital patients who were prayed for (and knew they were being prayed for) were more likely to die....

Now you mention it, I seem to remember that... but I can't remember whether it was statistically significant. Certainly red sugar pills are more powerful painkillers than blue ones, and doubling the dose increases effectiveness ;)

statiistics can be used to prove anything. 76% of people know that ;)

Especially if conducted by a staunch and militant atheist ;)

if your laid up in Hospital and one of the nurses offers to prey for you ,you just might get the idea that they've run out of ideas to help you ,and are abandoning science /medicine ..

if it was me i would not be offended, it makes no difference to me[as a non believer] but sometimes it can help the person doing the preying ,its there way of getting thru the bad times ..

suspending her is a little to knee jerk - there's a lot more believers out there than non believers ,and as long as its not thrust upon you as your only option you cant really blame her for asking.

We're not religious at all and sadly our youngest has been in hospital many times. If at any time a nurse had offered to pray for him we might have been surprised but we certainly wouldn't have been offended. Anyone offering spiritual support at a time of such trauma is merely expressing their caring in another manner. What on earth is wrong with that??
Anyone offended at such action really ought to look at themselves and examine their own intolerance.....

Whilst I admire and share your viewpoint, others may feel differently - they may be angry with the world and their (please fill in deity/prophet of choice), and may in fact blaming their (as above), so get upset if someone makes this kind of offer. And has been stated before and in the link, the nurse had been requested (firmly) not to do this sort of thing again.

If their doctor suggests their illness is so severe that he needs to get the opinion of a more senior physician, is it not possible the patient might feel equally angry with the level of their care, blaming them for the added suffering?

Seriously, if someone is going to be offended by such an offer then they clearly want to be offended.
