Re: No web access.
Try this:
Code:
nslookup www.google.co.uk I'll bet that fails. Once it has go to your network connections dialogue, and look uner the 'properties' of the TCP/IP component - have a look and see what it says for DNS Servers. |

Try going to start, run, type services.msc, ok it. You'll get huge list, look for DNS Client. Double click it make sure start up type is automatic and that the service has started. |
Re: No web access.
although the device is listed as working properly, removing it and readding it can fix a whole range of issues and reset some settings to default, meaning you basically start with a blank canvas on the device.

Re: No web access.
right click on My Computer
Select Manage Select Device Manager on the left list (under system tools) on the right, expand Network Adapters Right click on the network device being used for your Internet connection and select Uninstall Once removed, go to Action Select Scan For Hardware Changes This will reinstall the device |
Re: No web access.
Thanks Bender I just wanted to make sure, and the job was easy, got rid of the existing one then it scanned and reinstalled it, but this stubborn problem refuses to go away, still the same I'm afraid.

Re: No web access.
with a windows XP disc inserted in the drive, go to Start > Run and type 'sfc /scannow' without quotations. This will scan and replace any core system files windows thinks may be corrupt. don't worry about your SP version as this will be retained provided the SP install files are on the machine

Re: No web access.
Thanks for that and I wanted to know bit more about sfc and went to this site
Code:
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html Oh and btw my own PC runs XP Pro and this laptop has the home version, will my disc still do the job? ravel |
Re: No web access.
good question. off the top of my head, I don't know. never tried it, but google will tell you!! ;)
You could also run 'chkdsk /f' and reboot. start with the basics and work up. you've eliminated the modem / router and the cable. might still be the device though. more than likely just a dodgy file or setting. just a case of eliminating those one by one. |
Re: No web access.
IP and DNS might be set to Automatic, but I've not seen any evidence that he's actually got any set yet ;)
Do me a favour (just to satisfy my curiosity): Start > Control Panel > Network Connections Right-click on your network adaptor Select 'Status', then the 'Support' tab, then 'Details' What do you have listed as the DNS servers? |

Re: No web access.
sfc /scannow will need the disc as it needs the i386 folder to restore original files. you'll do no harm. :)

Re: No web access.
Firstly at the end of this, what has been for me highly informative and useful thread, I would like to thank all the forum members involved, but especialy Bender who gave me the the solution to my four day problem.
I ran the sfc with Windows XP Pro disc, and after rebooting there was a message at top screen which had never been there before saying "Please Wait". When the boot was complete I experienced that magic moment when the out side internet world came into my brothers laptop, many thanks for your help Bender. Best Regards ravel. |
Re: No web access.
Very glad to hear you're sorted and very well done to Bender for the solution.
