Re: Virgins new 50mb modem??"
I think we are gonna have MAJOR problems with these modems if they have an inbuilt router. Their netgear routers that uses their own firmware they have done something to it which stops people using peer to peer as the router resets itself every few mins and connection drops but this also has an affect on Legal peer to peer like BBC Iplayer etc and it also drops out using FTP. This is a known problem and many people have reported it on the Virgin Newsgroup and if u google it, many more will come up.

I don't understand why it isn't a modem/router. I've helped plenty of technology novices set up their VM connection and the separate components really confuse people. I would have thought this a perfect opportunity to change things up and reduce their costs (surely a modem router is cheaper than two separate devices, one of which is sent by courier?)

My 256 resides in the bottom of an ickle 'comm's rack' passing bits to, and receiving bits from, my firewall; disallowing me public R-O access via SNMP and warming up the cupboard. So as long as it keeps doing that I don't much care for how curvaceous, glossy or cool it looks while doing so. :) And modems with build in routers, ewwwww. How hard can it be to plug in a dedicated routing device into a dedicated 'modeming' device? |
