Most common damage i've seen is where the plastic center bit gets broken off leaving the pins hanging, and if the End user doesn't notice it's then possible that when plugging the next item in you bend the pins causing them to touch and short out, ESP if you accidently tried to plug it in back to front, without that centre bit in place you could probably force it in.
Mind you seen a few USB sockets missing that center bit, not seen one shorted one out yet. |
