Again, it's all down to Rupert Murdoch.

Football players are mercenaries, it's been like that for moons now. Notably, it's been mainly Spain and Italy in recent years. And now it's England, prize money, and television rights play a large part, not forgetting merchandising. It's supply and demand, nothing more, nothing less. Football clubs are not stupid, they balance the books much more business like now. There's no way they would spend the sort of numbers they are, without seeing a decent return for their investments. Unfortunately, this means your average supporter, is fast becoming a thing of the past, and is much more corporate. Hence the reason I don't go anymore, I've been priced out. It's more of an elitist sport now, no wonder atmosphere's are suffering as a consequence. :erm:

You know Bergkamps final contract at Arsenal was so complicated, due to the bonus structure, the tax man couldn't work it out :(

What a great argument you made there

I couldn't agree more. Gone are the days when most of the players actually went to the stadium on the same bus as the fans.

It's so ridiculous now, the money they get paid is wrong, totally wrong. It's not about football these days, it's all about money, power and greed! Thinking about it, it always has been.

Maybe it's because they would get mobbed by fans???

The money they get paid isn't wrong, as i pointed out before, it sounds to me that a lot of people are just jealous of football players and how much they earn...

I understand that in this day and age they would get mobbed, but as for the amount of money they get paid being right, and people being jealous, that's not true, it's just pure greed.

Hi Danielf, Your comment concerning going over the Holland, and the facilities that they have, has summed up the thread that l started, l am a referee and some of the grounds that l have been on, have been pathetic and poor, and yet these clubs pay a great deal of money to the local authorities, if the Premiership clubs can waste a great deal of money, then they can pass it onto the grass roots of football, where kids can learn the skills of football, and keep them off the streets, it is true that the greed of clubs, along with TV companies offering pots of money, l believe that Sky pay £70.000 per game, the good thing is that Setanta do cover lower league sides and sometimes there have been some brilliant games on Setanta, can you see Sky covering games from League Two or even Clubs from Rymans leagues, l doubt it,:)

The amount of money in football is stupid, and while the players deserve to get most of the money that goes into it (since they are the ones doing the 'work') it is ridiculous how much they get. It's a massively overvalued skill but the market has decided that value and you can hardly blame the players for that.

Instead the over-the-top interest and importance people place in football is what is causing the inflated prices of tickets, shirts, and TV rights and ultimately the excessive wages paid to these players.

I wouldn't say people are jealous just miffed at why the ability to play football warrants such excessive pay. The thing that annoys me is the amount of footballing autobiographies there are. In all but a few cases I cannot see what a footballer has to say that is worth a book! To see autobiographies from the most interesting, intelligent and accomplished people society has to offer being outsold by Wayne Rooneys autobiography is almost as depressing as the fact that even his girlfriend has a book out now....

Dont people want to earn the most they can in whatever they do? So whats the problem with a footballer earning 120K, all of us would love earning so much in my opinion, and if I got it for kicking a ball and entertaining 60,000 people every week, then I for one would not be complaining.

My point is it's the system at fault for allowing that much money to be in the game, not the players for taking it.

I don't want to earn ridiculous amounts of money. Is that 120k a week? All of us? Speak for yourself. ;)

All i'm going to say is can you or anyone else who has replied in this thread do the same job as the top premiership players like Ronaldo, Terry and Gerrard? I'm 100% sure the answer is no, they have a skill that is rare and in high demand so imo they deserve every penny they earn. People don't moan about those who work in banks and in the city that earn similar amounts to footballers, even though theres probably more skill to being a footballer than a boss of a big company.

Yes, they do in fact moan about the money top bankers earn.

Also, I think you might find there is a bit more to running a company of thousands of people and multi-million pound turnover than there is to kicking a ball about a field. ;)

Not even a fraction of the amount people do about footballers.

What the FA should do is limit the number of foriegn players in a match to 3 per team.

This would mean all those players would stand a beter change to play intop class teams, and may be we will win the World Cup again
