Odd, they just sent me another self install pack with another 256 and my 3rd PIN/ID number.

Cant really be bothered hooking it up as i guess its just another 2mb modem

Re: Are VM installing the VM 256 (AMBIT 256) modem yet

hello all
i'm not sure if this is the right bit to put this in but here goes.

i have the VM model256 ambit modem. and was wondering VM says i can have up2 4 connections on the modem. i seem to be having a problem as the belkin 8port network box i have doesnt want to split the BB connection. im trying to connect my mac and vista laptop .using this box.as good old VM 256 modem box , only has 1 ethernet port.but if i try to accecss the net through the belkin box it will only allow 1 connection through it. either my mac or my lappy. so i know it works ok.but not both at the same time ?? i never had any probs when i was on BT i had 2 macs my lappy and my xbox 360 all running through the belkin box with no probs . i choose VM BB for the connection as BT wasnt supplying a 20meg connection. i was talking to one of my friends and he said that maybe i need to get the ip address to access the modem maybe there will be something on there to allow more connections. rather than the just 1 .if so does anyone have the code so i can put in my browser so i can check to see ,or can anyone shed some light ,if im doing something wrong? many thanks Sparky :-)

The 4 connections thing means you can swap out 4 different devices on the modem in 24 hours. So it means you could directly connect a PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and another PC.

If after you did that you also tried to connect a 3rd PC you would have to wait for 24 hours to do so.

A router, however, counts as one device as the modem doesn't see passed it.

If you are having issues connecting multiple thing to router, I would say it is the router, and not a modem issue.

Access the modem bu typing 192.168.100.1 into your browser.

Did you use this Belkin on your BT connection?
Is it compatible with cable broadband?

yes it was the same belkin box and if it wasnt compatable i wouldnt even be able to a connection through the box is that right? .so from what your saying .should i connect everything into the belking box then because its only letting me connect 1 thing at a time once 24hours are up everything connected should work right? why dont the make these modems with multiple ethernet ports on it so there wont be this problem when connection various things that require an ethernet port :-(
but many thanks for all your help

By the sounds of it you have a belkin switch or hub, when you need a router. Didn't you get a wireless router when you got your 20MB subscription? If not, go and get a ROUTER, not a SWITCH or HUB!

Re: Are VM installing the VM 256 (AMBIT 256) modem yet

i moved house and thought id take my bb connection with virgin with me as they have cable down my road. and when i asked to change my account to the new address. i asked for a wireless modem/router and they said of-course no probs.but when the blokes came round to install my connection they only gave me the updated vers of the modem. and wasn't very helpful at all. i should of had my new phone line installed too but they said id have to ring up virgin to sort it.i asked for the same package as i had the XL virgin package and to my surprise i am just stuck with just the BB connection with No phone line grrrr they have got to be the worse installers i have ever had the miss-fortune to speak to .i was telling them in the end how to install it as they had no clue what the heck they were doing ..lol. and so regarding the hub i cannot see why there is such a prob trying to split the connection when i haven't had any probs doing it in the passed .very weird:-(

Hmmm, well i'm using an NTL: 250, will it work on the new network (when we get moved over) or am i going to have to phone & ask them to send out a modem that will?

Re: Are VM installing the VM 256 (AMBIT 256) modem yet

the 250 is fine, it is exactly the same as the 255/256 except it has a USB Socket on it

Unless of course the "new network" you;re talking about is the upcoming 50Mb line then yes you will need a new modem (even the 256 won;t run at that speed)

Also the 255 is the 250 without the USB, the 256 has a new chipset in it

Yes, tell customer services that you are having constant problems with your current modem, they will send you one out for free. I did that a couple of weeks back and it came a day later.

It may have worked before because you were already behind a router (most adsl providers will supply a router with a build-in modem). Virgin devices are just modems, no routers inside.

Damn, guess i'm just gonna have to go all Blue Peter on my 250 then, can get some blue cellophane for the flashing lights, and i think the steam iron will be perfect for adding those lovely curves the new one has.. sorted :dunce:
