2007-08 tax revenue forecasts
Total tax raised - £450 billion
Tobacco tax - £8 billion

However, whilst revenue is important, we mustn't forget the other benefits of smoking
Approximately half of all smokers will eventually die from smoking related diseases (Hanrahan et al 1996):
all smokers have a life expectancy that is 8 years less than those who have never smoked (Stapleton et al 1999).
30% of heart disease is attributable to smoking (http://www.mmaf.org/smoking.htm):
numerous studies conclusively show that smokers have a two- to four-fold increased incidence of CHD than non-smokers (Hanrahan et al 1996).

Us smokers have to pay for our cigarettes and we already pay far too much tax on the product already.!!!!
How about we get our ciggies on the NHS?

You can get your fix for a month for the price of a perscription if you're willing to quit ;)

Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Zyban and Champix are all available on prescription from your doctor. It doesn't have to cost you a fortune to beat the cravings and go smokefree. Why not speak to your doctor today?

i do roll ups and have been doing so for many years, they are a hell of a lot cheaper and a better smoke,i enjoy a fag and have no notion of quitting,i also respect the wishes of non smokers, bear in mind a lot of revenue is accrued through smoking and this so called government will find ways and means to recoup the lost revenue that you and i wont like.

Tax away government and rejoice all you anti-smoking people until they lose too much cash and everyone has to start paying extra tax and with this government you know it won't take them long to raise income tax :). Being honest i have an appointment next week for some smoking clinic to stop and it is not the price or those pathetic health warnings that have impacted me or encouraged me to stop. They should stop all the advert's and tax as from what i have ever seen it has zero impact on those that are not already thinking about stopping.

I'm like you, I get mine off a lorry driver who drives in Spain and France every 2 weeks, he gets me 400 Benson and Hedges for £46. Buy the same in the UK and you'll be looking in the region of £110. 200 Bensons last me 2 weeks, the other 200 are for a woman next door.

Ok then lets hike the price of a pint up to £7 then. Why hit the smokers all the time??? More strain is placed on the Health Service by drinkers than smokers.

Re: £10 for 20 cigarettes

Yeah to be honest i am sick of the constant attack on smoking while alcohol a far more destructive substance seems to get off scot free. Even doctors that subscribe to the passive smoking argument (and there are still many that don't) say very prolonged exsposure will cause problems and not in all cases.

Drinking on the other hand is starting to affect a lot more people in a lot more ways. Damage to property i live on a road that is used by many of the town's drunkards on their way home and car's and property are routinely damaged by these idiot's that think it is funny. Domestic abuse is fuelled by alcohol and is a rising problem. But here is the difference most people don't smoke so it's ok to hit that constantly but the majority enjoy a drink and so that is ok.

Before people start chiming in with the "i drink sensibly and i am a problem to no one" i was a sensible and considerate smoker but it didn't stop anyone taking away my right to have a night out and a coke and a fag in the comfort of a bar so why should i concede to you sensible drinker's when a few drinker's affect me negatively.

This is how i think the government want us to be divide and conquer and it is the only thing recently i have seen that is woirking out for them we are all so busy turning on each other for what we don't like we play right into their control freak hands clapping as we go.

Wouldn't it just make the people who smoke even more poor?

Simply putting the price up surely won't really make people quit is they are really dependant/addictied to it?

Most of the people I know who've given it up have done so for financial reasons rather than health.

Not to forget the betting tax.
As I dont run a car but smoke, I hope the that petrol and diesel are heavily taxed and I can use public transport to nip over the channel to have a day out in Calais and come back laden with booty.
