Could be a toughy one if they do bring out a blu ray player for the 360, the main factor will have to be the price of course. If it's about half the price of a PS3 (or thereabouts) then I reckon people would just buy the console instead.

Then on top of that if you buy a new 360 and want the blu ray player then it could end up costing more than the PS3.

Besides that, there still is the noise factor of the 360 itself, and those with 1080p would have to get the Elite version of the 360.

OK, dead format, but there's still loads of discs out for it, which should also be going cheap.

Yep! GAME are now offering the HD DVD Player at the reduced price of $39.99

Why? All versions of the Xbox 360 now come with HDMI and all versions of the Xbox 360 are capable of 1080p.

Oh right, my bad then, I thought you needed to have the HDMI connection to get 1080p. :)

I think you do for HD DVD's but then again, all Xbox 360's now come with HDMI.

I thought the main difference between the two formats (content rather than physical and ignoring any extras) was the Blu Ray had Mandatory encryption (ie: the producers had to use it), where as HD-DVD they had the choicd to use it.

Still, seeing as most studios would probably choose to use it, you would need HDMI anyway.

Well mine don't as it's an older one, hence what I wrote earlier. For me to get full 1080p I'd have to buy another newer version 360. So best to invest in a PS3 'IF' that is the case.

I think the Xbox is capable of 1080p through all it's connections, but to watch any HDCP protected content (pretty much every HD DVD or Blu Ray disc), you'd need an HDMI output.

Its just the way you said it. All Xbox 360's , even the older ones are 1080p for games. Im sure you need HDMI to be able to watch HD DVD's in 1080p though, but I may be mistaken.

If it's not one thing it's another ain't it. Thanks for the clarification though.

Re: What now for Xbox360 HD DVD?

360 max. resolutions for different connections & different uses -

Component:

Games can be output up to 1080p

HD DVDs can be output up to 1080i (AACS restrictions - nothing to do with the 360 itself)

DVDs can only output up to 480p/576p (progressive scan NTSC/PAL) (CSS restrictions - nothing to do with the 360 itself)

VGA:

Games *and* HD DVDs can be output up to 1080p*

DVDs can be upscaled up to 1080p*.

[* VGA is not subject to the same AACS/CSS restrictions as component, despite also being analogue & unsecure, due to some sort of loophole over it being primarily a PC connection method]

HDMI:

Games *and* HD DVDs can be output up to 1080p

DVDs can be upscaled up to 1080p
