ive just tried to disabled and enable my direct connection without the firewall running and it works, so my firewall is stopping me obtaining a new ip address. i dont have a clue how to solve this and never had it on my previous P.C

if your firewall is the cause then why not uninstall it and just use the standard windows firewall. can be enabled by going to network connections folder and click 'Change Windows Firewall settings' under network tasks in the left pane
