I've never had good results using speedtest.net according to them I'm pinging at 466ms to maidenhead. :dozey:

I've found this one, to give better results.

I've had 9Mbit/s from speedtest.net before, quite an accomplishment given that my modem Sync rate is 8128kps and because of the Ip profiling my line can never achieve more than 7150kps thoughput :rolleyes:

This is a big difference. VM ADSL and VM cable are different beasts altogether. I had VM cable (4 meg, ex telewest) and it has been rock solid. I recently moved house and I would definitely have kept it if it were available in my area.

With some helpful advice from people on here (thank you Pedantic) I went with ADSL24, and so far it definitely looks good. Apart from the 10-12 pm slowdown, speeds are solid, and I really like the fact that the MD regularly posts on their forum. A refreshing approach to customer service. :tu:

That's my point exactly, unreliable. I suspect, given the short time it takes to test, that it's reporting your burst speed. Everyones speed starts off very high, and then comes down to give a realistic speed.

Even if it was reporting my burst speed I don't see how that could be 9Mbit/s either.

My IP profile is set at 7150kps, The RAS won't allow anything over that, besides which even if i I Did manage to surpass that my modem is sycned in at 8128kps.

To get a 9mbit speed even at burst it'd have to be transferring data at a rate beyond what's actually possible for my line how do you get 9Mbit/s of traffic down 8Mbit/s of pipe :confused:

Only way It could be doing it is if its measuring the speed to something other than me surely or it miscalculated somehow.

Without taking this too far off topic (sorry peeps) have you tried a resync, or reconnection, as it may be a central problem. Also, I would advise you use the opendns servers, as they are a lot more snappy than Enta's.

I regularly get burst speeds of 20% more than what my top speed should be, not for very long, but it does happen.

Measured using what....

Some programs are very inaccurate for that firefox for instance will start downloading as soon as you hit the link but will only start calculating the speed when you've actually told it where to save to.

It then sees that it already has say 10% of the file and takes that into account when calculating speeds but doesn't take into account the start time so just assumes it got that 10% in no time at all, makes for some very interesting speed readings at the start of a download.

Measured using every browser you can think of, and a few ftp programs too. It may be down to the fact that my Rwin is set relatively high, because I use websites that are located in the U.S so latency can be an issue. May be you don't see it to the degree I do, because of BT's infamous traffic shaping. :D

As I say, it doesn't last that long, a second or two, but that would be enough for the speedtest.net servers, as it's a very quick test. Too quick, as it turns out.

compression can cause the speed to go higher than it actually is, an example is giganews has a program for using compression to download headers, i regualry hit over 40mpbs on my conenction

Browser speeds are inaccurate especially at start of file downloads and on small files. I have seen some ftp clients like ftprush that report speed badly. Its physically impossible for a line to burst higher then its capacity.
