I've just bought my mum a copy of F-Prot for Windows - for her new PC. I'm not particularly pro- anti-virus software, but she's a novice user, so in that respect the purchase is justified.

i recommend dr.web, great at unpacking with great heuristics and super support.

26 euro for 2 year licence and low on system resources, fantastic.

Re: Recommened Anti-Virus Software

Ive been running with Kaspersky for a week now, and although my initial impressons of it were good, it's being un-installed tonight in favour of NOD32, reason being is that even though I have been giving this PC some heavy usage over the past week, Kaspersky still seems to be in it's learning phase, asking me what to do about something every two minutes.

What has made my choice easier is that I have two installs of XP, my main one, and another on a re-movable hard drive, I installed NOD32 on the removable drive as a test and have now decided to use it on my main install.

Kaspersky may be good, but it takes more training than Zonealarm.

Hi Jon,

It sounds like you were still in "Training Mode". Did you move the slider in Settings > Anti Hacker away from "Training Mode"?

If you don't want the firewall, you could have tried Kaspersky Anti Virus rather than Kaspersky Internet Security. As I said previously, it's a personal choice. NOD32 is a very good anti-virus and it will be interesting to see how you get on with it.

Using NOD32 myself, but as a freebie this is good...very good.

I'm not running the Internet Security Version, only the anti-virus, I would stick with it but i'm getting fed up with it telling me that Firefox is ilegally accessing the registry etc, stuff like that. Even when you tell it to "put this application in the trusted zone" it flags the same thing up again when the same conditon happens with slighty different parameters, i.e. your trying to view "abc.pdf" when you'd already ok'ed the viewing of "123.pdf" earlier.

IfI could clear this up, i'd stick with Kaspersky, if only because I like the UI better that NOD32

These are the settings that I have available to me:

I used to use Norton AV (:erm:), & then moved to Avast for a while.

Been using Kaspersky Anti-Virus for maybe 6 months now. Find it very good, prefer it to Norton & Avast.

I became very disenchanted with NAV 2002 dumped it & never went back. Been using McAfee ever since, no problemo. :)

Nod32 here.Never had any problems with it in three years. As someone who frequently wants all the memory I can get, to render art work I find it excellent as it uses so few resources.

As for not having an AV at start up,that does seem like asking for trouble. With my memory I'd forget to check I had an AV running.:)

I'm sure someone will remind me how quickly a new clean PC connected to the net can become infected.;)

Oh and did Neil ever give out the results on his experimental PC to see how soon and how often it would get infected?:erm:
