yes it does come with 4 wired ports so would this avoid me having to re register his ps2 for playing online ?

also could i connect this new router via its wired connections to my current router and use the both together ?

never tried that but if you plug into a lan and leave the wan I think it will just use the switch

i only have 1 pc and the ps2 plugged into my wired router so there is still 2 spare ports so just plugging the wireless router into the wired router would work a treat has anyone got this set up ?

In theory it will work - you plug the new router's WAN port into one of the old routers ports. The new router gets a DHCP address from the old router and the new one then issues it's own DHCP addresses. You will probably need to change the default local address range for the new router as it will clash with the old one. ie the old one will be using 192.168.1.xxx and so will the new. In the admin page for the WRT54G you can change the local address range to 192.168.2.xxx.
It's not a great solution as you're adding unecessary overhead (Wireless traffic now has to pass through the firewall on two routers!) but it should work.

Whatever you do, do not get a Linksys WRT54G!!!

The signal coverage is crap on the latest versions. The V7 model is totally crap!

They use a different chip set to the other models and are well know to have poor signal!

I had the V5 model and got signal all over my home but it developed a fault so I took it back to argos and they replaced it but only had the V7 model and I could not get any signal in my living room at all. Had three V7 units all the same so I email linksys who confirmed there are known issues with the V7 and told me to take it back for a refund so that is what I did yesterday! If you got a plasterboard house then you may be lucky otherwise do a google and see for yourself!

I need to find a quality router now!

Just to add the V1-V4 were supposed to be the best models of the WRT54G. V5 & V6 had less memory and came with a different firmware version. The V7 is basically a tottaly different router in the same case!

If you can get hold of one of the earlier versions of the WRT54G then grab one! (Try ebay)

However if you buy a new one then you will no doubt get a Version 7.

To be honest I am looking for a new one myself and I am not sure which one to get. If anyone can point out a good wireless router that has good coverage then you will no doubt be helping us both out! :)

Looks OK to me, however I will stick with the WRT54GL and attach the high gain antennas instead of the standard ones that come attached to it!
