Re: best wireless router for NTL
Hi
Not sure weather to start a new post or jump on this one but here goes. Netgear RP614v2 seems to be dying(poss.heat related) on me ,have to reset every day. Looking for a new Router (4mb ntl cable modem broadband) Linksys WRT54GS - Recommended here: 1.Why are people concerned with serial nmbers of these units? 2.Can I turn Wireless off as I only want Wired connection for now? 3.Any thoughts on D-Links DGL-4300 as an alternative. Thanks for any input in advance. |
Re: best wireless router for NTL
1. Everyone seems to want the older models on these routers to put 3rd party firmware on them. However, this can be done on the newer versions too now, so it really does not matter any more.
2. You can indeed turn wireless off. |

Thanks.
Is there any need for my simple 3 pc home network for 3rd party s/w,are there problems with the original s/w that you know of? |
Re: best wireless router for NTL
Not that I know of, original firmware should be fine according to all Linksys fans here...

Re: best wireless router for NTL
Hi,
A little off topic - but might be worth a warning... I have tried 3 different wireless routers (USR, Sony LocationFree and some odd brand from Maplin) and I find that I get half the speed (4mbps) via wireless compared to 8mbps using a direct connection to the cable modem (on my 10mbps connection). From this thread http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ighlight=speed it seems that it is to be expected. Strangely, on my old adsl 2mbps connection, I get pretty much 2mbps over the wireless connection (netgear router). I am thinking that I need to use the power-over-ethernet in order to be able to use the higher speeds... Thanks, Chris |
Re: best wireless router for NTL
Always managed a solid 4mb connection over wireless, i can even stream DVD's at 3mbytes a second over wireless (equivalent of 24mb broadband). Linksys WRT54G v5.1 router.

Re: best wireless router for NTL
Personally I would stay away from the Linksys WRT54G as the latest one is a version 7. Totally different bit of kit although it looks the same!
Has very poor signal strength! If you can get any other than the version 7 then go for it but you will prob regret it if you end up with a v7 model! :( |
Re: best wireless router for NTL
whats the best (wap) wireless access point to go with a linksys wired router and ntl ?

Re: best wireless router for NTL
Not overly in keeping with how the thread is progressing .. but this is a good read for anyone considering buying a router for use with ntl.
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware...ear-dg834g.asp near the bottom of the page there is a section called Performance, Enjoy :) ( ok so it may be for adsl routers, but it gives some ideas ) |
