Re: Sound Problem

When you install 98 does it install generic drivers for the soundchip first or does it not support it out of the box?

Re: Sound Problem

It doesn't support it as far as i'm aware. There are "?" in device manager before an install.

Thats okay...its usually the simplist thing that gets forgotton.!! The only leads are to the speakers...its on-board sound..and yes the device manager has c media sound controller and gameport...

Both seem to be fine...no probs being id'd.

Re: Sound Problem

Is it Windows 98SE? Otherwise the OS isn't supported
Quote:

All OS = Win98SE , WinME , Win2K , WinXP
But that's a mute point (excuse the pun) since it was working. Is the OS fully patched?

Are you sure the lead is correctly plugged in,I know from experience the asrock boards differ to most boards where audio out is at top ,I think asrock has it in the middle

That wouldn't explain Windows not seeing the soundchip as a valid output device though would it? Grayed out options normally mean unsupported options in most cases.

I'm leaning towards knackered soundchip, especially if a clean install of Windows and then an install of the newest drivers is failling to pick it up properly.

Re: Sound Problem

hmmm thats what i'm starting to think...I don't even get a crackle when i plug the speakers into the jack socket...just a little thing i know but you normally get a click, hiss or something...

Tomorrow i'm going to strip it out and give it a blast with compressed air......i had a on board LAN controller with an address of 0.0.0.0 once.....i think it was short circuiting...took it out cleaned it and the proper address came back....funnily enough that was a Asrock K7S8X board.....

Right still couldn't get it to work, so last resort. INSTALL XP (without a license admitedly!)...

Now it works....so what do i do now????

My friend doesn't have a license so technically win 98 should go back on.
I'm finding this very weird... I installed xp. Straight after the wecome screen i installed the drivers (first thing i did!) and just as it was restarting the volume control popped up and now it works...how do i get 98 working.????????

Re: Sound Problem

Xp must be correctly identifying the chip and loading modern drivers for it. Have a look in device manager and such like to dientify exactly what driver (make model, etc) is loaded. From that google to see if you can find the Win 98 drivers download from the manufacturer's site or wherever.

Then completely reformat the HD and reload Win 98. kill off all loaded win 98 drivers after startup. As you then reboot and it detects hardware use the new drivers you have downloaded.

The other option is to buy a licenced copy of Win XP. These people are probably as cheap as anywhere (and they've always been prompt delivery too) http://www.netcomonline.co.uk/desc.php?pid=102-986

Re: Sound Problem

Also i had already downloaded the correct drivers for 98, thats why this is so confusing......

how do i kill off the win98 drivers.? Remove the devices from device manager?

I have a program that allows backups of drivers.....if i use that with xp then install them on 98 do you think they would work...after all they are exactly the same drivers i've been using but obviously the OS has been doing something wrong.
