Re: Windows XP Services (are they all required)
First thing I would is themes and then go into my computer and into the settings for fancy fade out menus and disable all those.
I remember viper saying it can take upto 12mb of Ram, thats one of the first things I remove. Along with security centre for sp2, and indexing service. |
Re: Windows XP Services (are they all required)
I've got 42 running processes:disturbd:

Re: Windows XP Services (are they all required)
Does anyone have any other tips and tricks for speeding up your computer, I am limited in services what I can remove as I run a ethernet network with file sharing to my gf's laptop.
Could use all the power I can nab from this pc. Going to be a few week before I can afford the RAM from crucial and to change over to IDE drivers ( long story ) |
Re: Windows XP Services (are they all required)
Apart from removing un-necessary programs from the background and removing unwanted services there is little you can do apart from turning off the telly-tubby land themes and the whistles and bells for menu transitions etc.

Re: Windows XP Services (are they all required)
I have done all that Paul, and the silly themes look nice for a bit but get boring and annoying after.

Re: Windows XP Services (are they all required)
Not a lot more you can do now then, the only way you can truly speed up your PC is to upgrade hardware (Ram and CPU primarily).

Re: Windows XP Services (are they all required)
CPU no chance never messed with one before and this 3000 64 athlon is nice enough, ram yes I am toyin with getting 1gb and replacing my single stick with two better quality 512's.

OK, first of all, define slow. We need some benchmark figures. What you consider 'slow' may in fact be 'normal'.

Re: Windows XP Services (are they all required)
Saxo....
You should definately notice a difference going from 512 to 1gb and it will run more efficiently as dual channel together. The only other way to increase speed after having done everything else including defragging, etc.... is to attempt to overclock the CPu or replace the CPU altogether. However overclocking is a risky business and should only be attempted if you know what you are doing and also have adequate cooling. |
