afaik - you would need to register another account with ntl or another provider. Personally I would use something like Virgin.net or Tesco.net as they are on ntl's network so you won't need to go flicking smtp server setttings etc....

Are all these machines on private or public addresses. If they are on private addresses then from outside you will only be able to check the security of the machine or box with the public address i.e. a NAT router.

If you just want to a simple port scan then why not dialup using another PC, and install something like SuperScan and scan your systems like that?

I have 4 computers on a network, but only 3 are ever in use at the same time (how can I use a laptop AND a desktop at the same time?!)

As for shell account... you can telnet into your webspace using your primary account details (I did this to remove a directory I had managed to break by uploading a .htaccess file. Dont think you get any other facilities on there other than sending ftp commands though. Infact, it was a while ago, so it might've just been the ftp client on command line... cant remember to be sure, I'll try again tonight and post if it is telnet/ssh access.

If you get caught using this type of access for non-webspace reasons, you're likely to get a slap (or in trouble for going against the AUP) and these types of activity are usually logged for tracking things like warez and non-authorised people attempting to get access etc.

Best option though - use a mate's computer at their house and try it from there!

You won't get shell access to your ntl webspace!!!!

You might with a web hosting provider however.

reading on throughout my post you will see I said it was probably ftp access through command prompt which you can do on EVERY ftp service as both Windows and Linux have command prompt ftp clients.

I would edit my previous post, but I do not have the ability to do so.

It was the ftp command prompt. I was getting confused with the ssh access I have to a linux box I help admin for a mate. Sorry for the misleading post earlier... but to stress, it was just ftp access.
