Or could you drop the drive into a different machine (as a slave) and scan the drive that way?

That way you're not scanning a drive whilst it is in use by the OS, you might get better results.

That will just give the same problem, as it can't read the file on the disk even though it says it is there.

I could also give that try, although I'd have to ask him if he's willing to be without a PC for a few hours to a day while I scan it and repair it (if possible).
