I did actually send an email to NTL to get the official position on static IP but obviously I'm not expecting a response prior to the first manned landing on Mars. In fact, by the time they get round to responding Mars will probably have become a cheap package holiday destination somewhat like Ibiza. All together...who's in the house??? Zog's in the house !!!

dunno about years but since the upgrade ive had router problems(nothing to do with upgrade just on its last legs) and had to reset loads my ip has stayed same also

The official position is that a residential service does not get a static IP (but I'm not an NTL official).

Unofficially if your CM/Rtr are never switched off it will not change very often. Even if they are never switched off if NTL choose to resegment your element of their network then you will get a new IP.

If you want a static IP you must sign up to the business product. The costs of the business and residential products look similar, but the business one is ex-VAT so add 17.5% to those prices. It is also a longer contract period.

My IP address may well stay the same normally but it cannot be guaranteed with DHCP. I need the connection to support out of hours system maintenance and if I have to log on at 2am only to discover I can's get VPN access as NTL have changed my IP then I'm in deep trouble, leaving me with the option of taking the drive to work (an hour away).:walk:
I think my best bet is to try and persuade my employers against static IP security.

Then your employer should be willing to upgrade you to a business service, or they should have a non-enterprise solution, e.g. RSA Key fobs or similar for authentication.

As said earlier, can they not point to a no-dns name that translates to your dynamic IP.

Yes thanks for that - I've put these suggestions to them now - personally I think a combination security fobs and mac address validation would provide better security that static IP.

I know that BB via STB is DHCP but like others I have had the same IP for years.

Does a SACM have the same "feature" if left switched on 24/7?

Yep, my IP changed rarely, if ever, and I had a SACM for 2 or 3 years. The point is, you can't guarantee it won't change, so you can't rely on it.

the only times my ip has changed was during the upgrade from 750k to 2mb... that dyndns is a good idea, i used something similar.. except i use my own domain name... eg home.oinkyboinky.co.uk points to the ip of my home pc... and if my ip changes, i just update my dns...
