IMO there's nothing wrong in trying to make the workplace a little less formal where appropriate.

It's all very well you you to say that Boyo.... :)

I am pleasantly suprised that more people aren't offended, I thought they would be.

I wouldn't care call any female love, honey, sweetheart (unless she called me it first) because people have been punished because of the sexual harassment side of it, but my manager is an ex-fireman, so he has the sense of humour you can have a laugh with. I'll call him pilchard, numb nuts, anything. I do love hearing the petnames though, it shows someone at least likes you.

I call everyone mate though, even if I don't particularly like them. That's the cockney in me (Anyone who says I am from Essex is getting red-repped ;)). I enjoy being called it though... i'd rather be called mate than sir in a shop.

All depends on the situation, don't get me wrong I'm not a miserable B@st@rd (at least I don't think I am).

That particular scenario was with a right slimy **** with whom I wanted lay some boundaries from the off.

"Mate" is generic with blokes and I'm usually fine with that. However, I wouldn't allow an older peer of mine to call me "son" and If I was a woman I wouldn't allow anyone to call me "love"

Not surprised. I deal with a lot of Welsh customers at work and most are miserable and difficult.

Well I'm there sweating blood trying to fix their problem, and they're talking IN WELSH to someone in the room. Totally ignoring me  Should be more polite, otherwise they might suddenly have more computer problems ;) That said, they are usually doctor's receptionists and practice managers - not so much Dungeons and Dragons but Bimbos and Dragons :p:

I'm sure there are some lovely Welsh people - like you Russ :erm: :D

The word Welsh is actually an Old English word meaning †œforeigner; slaveââ‚ƚ¬Ã‚

So just tell the slaves in the doctors surgeries to do as you tell them and to shut up ;)

not old English

The English names of the Welsh language (in Welsh, y Gymraeg) and the Welsh people (y Cymry) and Wales (Cymru) derive from a Germanic name for foreigners that crops up elsewhere in Europe in the same way, and which comes from a Latin name for a lost Celtic people, the Volcae.
from http://users.comlab.ox.ac.uk/geraint.jones/about.welsh

some interesting stuff there - I didn't know there is a Welsh speaking community in Patagonia, for example :)
