I think KP is right.... no POST from the sound of it (or lack of sound :D ), which suggests new mobo needed.

yes, i've reseated the memory and it only has one DIMM in it. I would try adding in a PCI display card but i dont really want to risk breaking mine!

The problem was in fact the Power Supply. Anyone got an old one they dont want ;)

...but don't go too cheap. It can be a false economy. You spend a fiver on a PSU, which is poor quality and blows taking out your entire system.

I couldn't justify spending £50-£100 on a PSU, but I did get a nice silent one that was knocked down to £30 a couple of months ago.

He could always buy a good one for himself and put his in his parents old machine :D
