70 pish per day? That's a lot of pish. I though prison was s'posed to be cushy?

Yeah, this must be a bit of a morale boost for the kids. I'd feel a bit cheap if people decided to spend more on food for convicted paedophiles and serial killers, than growing kids.

It's only cushy in prison after Big Max and Sisy Steven have pounded your bottom all night long!

/I'm staying right where I am. :)

The difference, of course, is that school meals are merely subsidised, whereas prisoners' meals have to be fully paid for, seeing as the prisoners have no means to contribute to the cost.

When you allow for the fact that school kids might contribute another £1 or more to the cost of the meal on their plate, what you realise is that at 70p a dish, it's prison food that is shockingly cheap.

Not that I don't think there is vast room for improvement in school dinners of course. It just shows how bald statistics might earn you a quick soundbite but often don't stand up to scrutiny.

All I know is if you want your children to learn then they need to be eating a good balanced diet with as few food colourings and additives as possible.I frankly believe that a lot of behavioural problems in school might decrease IF we get the balance right. :tu:

I would agree. My eldest is getting excited about going to secondary school cos he think he can go on school dinners and have pizza every day. Poor lad doesn't know that dad's sticking to packed lunches, fully aware of the rubbish they serve in schools these days. The other thing that really got me about Jamie's Dinners was those plastic trays they served food in. Yuk! Could they not show the food some respect too?!

1. I detest Jamie Oliver. He's a mediocre chef but is very good at marketing himself.

2. Every time he opens his loudhaler of a mouth I detest him more.

3. Sainsbuy's instilled these thoughts in my head, as if you can find a supermarket whose own brand food tastes of less I've never been there...so every Sainsbury's ad with him on makes me detest him more.

4. His restaurant Fifteen serves overpriced canteen food. I've been there, and I've been to better cafes. This made me detest him lots more, especially as I was paying....grrrr.

5. I do think his cause is EXTREMELY worthwhile. But it's not like he's doing it becuase he actually cares...after all his brats will be going to private school. So his hypocracy makes me detest him more.

6. I have a very large issue here with a government that will bow the pressure of a loudmouth mediocre self-marketing hypocritical cook (note the absence of the word chef...I can't bring myself to use it when talking about him).

There are millions of parents who are very concerned about the standard (or lack of) with school dinners. The fact is that prison food is more beneficial to a rounded diet and such points have been raised time and time again.

But one little runt comes along and forces the government to do a U-turn...and we all roll-over and say thank you? Never mind what the parents have been asking for...Tone's down with Jamie...largin' it at no. 10...stuff the rest of us.

So today's pathetic attention seeking and election win-buying antics make me detest Jamie Oliver AND New Labour MORE THAN EVER.......

Phew!

[/rant]

Oh and by the way...listen carefully to Ruth Kelly's statement that only commits the spend for the next three years....after that you're on your own again. Unless St Jamie's still there to save us.

Can't disagree with anything you say (although Mr Oliver did himself make a point on the programme that his kids will be going to private school, but that the issue of kids health generally was important), but he has used his celebrity to shame the Government into doing something. Other celebs do not use their influence quite so usefully. However, I've not forgiven him for those awful, awful Sainsbury's ads and would never dream of going to Fifteen. :) But, whilst Mr Kipling makes exceedingly good cakes, Mr Oliver makes quite good telly.

Really? Blimey that was a good guess of mine! Just shows I know him better than I thought....

....and that makes me detest him more too...

He couldn't care less what your children ate....if he's that much of a martyr why isn't he donating the fee from C4 to provide half a dozen extra dinner ladies? Oh and the book sales profits?

It's just a simple exercise in self-promotion and profiteering on someone elses misery.

C4 make quite good telly (not that I've seen any of them as I've been watching The Apprentice instead), Jamie Oliver just makes by skin crawl. :Yikes:

Actually I think Oliver does care.... either that or he's an exceptionally gifted actor.

But if he gets a result, who cares? ;)

EDIT: I think he had some very good PR advice for this programme. Criticism was anticipated.

Maybe he does care...I notice it's on C4 late tonight..I might force myself to watch it so I can tell what I think...you lucky people.

The pain I put myself through for you
