I use Panda antivirus software on all my office PCs. Never had a problem. It is paid for though. Server OS will be considered to be businesss grade and thus very few companies will do freebies.

Ok, me again....

AVG doesn't work in a server environment, won't even install :(

Looks like I'm back to square one!!

I use Norton AV on W2K3 and Sophos on Linux/Unix, but under a corporate license - they probably cost lots for a single server.
Mounting C$ on your laptop may be the only 'free' option. :(

Wanted to avoid sharing the entire drive across the network if I could help it but I think you might be right.....

Shame, dodn't really want to have the Laptop on every time I wanted to check the Server for Virii.

Might have to see if I can find a nice cheap Home Server package, bte the bullett, and actually pay for some software.....:(

I would go get an evaluation copy of something like norton corporate.

The only problem being it can be a bit of a bugger to set up....

Unfortuantly I have never hear dof home server package, I think the cheapest server software i have found is stuff for small business and that still costs around £200 :eeek:

I'm still in my free 12 month trial of EZ-trust given out by Microsoft - no idea about 2003 server though...

Give this a try goto the Microsoft update page and follow the link and choose the operating system as NT and it will allow you to download a free version for 12 months. I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t know if it will run as a service as I am installing at the moment. It has just started to perform a virus scan, so itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s looking good. :)

Funny thing is it donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t show if you are using XP I was updating a ME puter and saw the link.

Edit: Well it looks like a good one, it loaded ok on Windows 2000 advanced server, done a check and re-started. Not bad for free

Ok, looks good so far.

Installed and running.

I take it that it will only run if I am logged in to the machine (obviously I don't want that) - is that where this "run as a service" business comes in?

How does that work then?

If you go to administration tools, and then click services, you will see all the items that can run as a service.

This includes things like DHCP etc.. You want to make sure that the AV services (whatever it may be called is set to automatic, this means it will run without being logged on to the server..

Thanks for that, found it now (the Service name is a bit obscure ;) ).

I take it that I just let it log on as "Local System account"? I don't need to create a specific account for it do I?

I have been using AntiVir from H+BEDV Datentechnik in Germany for some time now and it seems very robust.

They certainly do a 'free' version for personal use - I can't see why it wouldn't work on your server (Windows isn't it?)

Yep, it's Windows. The problem is that most (in fact it would seem, all) of the Free AV software is restricted so it won't run on any server platform.

I haven't got a server to try it. Have you tried it?
